‘Wildwood’ Streaming and Digital (Release Date)

The question of when ‘Wildwood’ will reach streaming and digital platforms is already being asked, even though the film has not yet opened. LAIKA announced that its sixth feature film will open nationwide on October 23. That makes the home viewing window the next big unknown for a studio that is leaning hard on the big screen.

At this stage, no official digital or streaming date has been confirmed. TV Guide currently lists the film as not available to stream. What follows is a look at what the sourced reporting actually says about the ‘Wildwood’ streaming and digital release date, and why the timing is harder to predict than usual.

What Is Known About the Digital Release

The only specific timeline in circulation is an estimate rather than an announcement. FandomWire reported that, based on industry estimates, a digital release through video on demand could land around late December or January, with a streaming debut possibly arriving by spring. Those figures are projections and have not been confirmed by LAIKA or its distributor.

A listing on Plex shows no streaming availability either, and it describes the film only through its theatrical status. The page gives the runtime as two hours and 12 minutes. That length is worth keeping in mind for viewers planning a home screening.

Readers should also treat third party release calendars with care. One database that surfaced in searches lists a different film that shares the same name, which is a reminder to check any digital date against LAIKA’s own channels.

The Theatrical Rollout Shaping the Streaming Window

LAIKA has framed this release as an event meant for cinemas. The studio’s official page promotes the film as playing only in theatres on October 23. That language suggests the studio wants a clear stretch of exclusive big screen time before any home release.

The distribution setup is also unusual for the studio. Fathom Entertainment is handling domestic distribution while FilmNation Entertainment oversees international sales. Fathom has a history with the studio, as LAIKA’s recent theatrical re-releases of ‘Coraline’ and ‘ParaNorman’ were part of the success that led to the partnership.

Studio chief Travis Knight has been direct about the intent. He said the film was designed to be discovered in the dark, on a big screen, with a room full of fellow dreamers. Knight has also called it “the biggest world Laika has ever built, and the most personal.”

Early Screenings and Critical Reception Ahead of Home Viewing

Momentum around the film has built quickly. ‘Wildwood’ premiered at the BFI London Film Festival to rapturous reviews. Its Rotten Tomatoes page showed a perfect score based on 16 reviews following that October 11 premiere.

That reception led to additional early access. LAIKA and Fathom announced fan first premium format screenings in more than 100 theatrical locations on October 19, ahead of the nationwide release on October 23. There are also gala screenings planned at the AFI Film Festival and the Animation is Film Festival.

Critics have been warm in their language. TheWrap reported that its own critic called the film “one of the most astonishing animated movies ever made.” Not every reaction has been uniform though, since one roundup noted that critics largely agree on the ambition of the stop motion but divide on the storytelling.

Strong word of mouth could influence how long the film stays in cinemas, which in turn affects when a digital release makes sense. The film currently leads Gold Derby’s odds for the Best Animated Feature category. A sustained awards conversation often keeps a film on screens longer.

Cast and Story Before ‘Wildwood’ Reaches Streaming

For viewers who plan to wait for streaming, the film’s premise is already well documented. Prue McKeel and her best friend Curtis are drawn into a hidden, magical forest after Prue’s baby brother Mac is kidnapped by crows led by a mysterious woman named Alexandra. Knight described the project to Empire as a sort of “American Narnia.”

The voice cast is deep. Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson and Charlie Day are among the performers lending their voices. Chris Butler wrote the screenplay, which is based on the novel by Colin Meloy.

The film also marks a notable return and a shift in tone. It arrives seven years after the studio’s last movie, ‘Missing Link,’ and it is LAIKA’s first PG-13 film. Reviewers have pointed to darker material as well, with one noting that the film includes multiple character deaths and at least one genuinely traumatic scene, which may make it a movie for older kids first.

Until a studio announcement arrives, theaters remain the only confirmed way to see ‘Wildwood’, and any digital date should be treated as unconfirmed. If LAIKA does hold the film in cinemas as long as its big screen messaging suggests, will you make the trip for ‘Wildwood’ on opening weekend or wait to see whether Prue’s journey into the forest feels the same at home?
