Will Thorfinn Ever Surpass Thors in Vinland Saga?

One of the things that we know about Thorfinn in the Vinland Saga manga and anime is that he trained for years to become strong enough to fight Askeladd and kill him in single combat. He basically grew up on the battlefield as he spent his childhood and teenage years fighting for Askeladd so that he could hone his skills as a fighter to avenge the death of his father, Thors, who was known as the strongest fighter of his time. So, will Thorfinn ever surpass Thors in Vinland Saga?

At this point in the manga, Thorfinn is strong enough to take on Thorkell in a serious battle but not strong enough to reach his father’s level. In the past, Thors was the only one strong enough to actually defeat Thorkell, and that means that Thorfinn isn’t even strong enough to surpass his father.

The Vinland Saga storyline is shaping up to become quite long, as Thorfinn is still in the middle of honing his skills long after Askeladd’s death. In that regard, he still has a long way to go before he can reach his father’s strength. But while Thorfinn is now one of the strongest characters in the entire Vinland Saga storyline, he is yet to reach his father’s level, although he may soon reach it.

How Strong Is Thorfinn In The Manga?

Since the start of the Vinland Saga storyline, Thorfinn’s story revolved around him getting stronger so that he can eventually take on the man that killed his father. He joined up with the mercenary crew of Askeladd, the man responsible for killing his father dishonorably so that he could eventually hone his skills and kill Askeladd in single combat. And we saw just how fast he progressed as a fighter.

Thorfinn basically grew up on the battlefield after his father’s death, as he had to fight constant battles to earn one-on-one fights with Askeladd. Every battle he fought for Askeladd allowed him to grow stronger even though he was still a very young teenager. And whenever he lost to Askeladd, he only grew stronger.

That was why Thorfinn was already second only to Askeladd in the mercenary crew during the events of season 1 of Vinland Saga. In fact, Thorfinn became strong enough to give Thorkell, the strongest character in the series after Thors’ death, trouble in their fight. And he was already nearly strong enough to kill Askeladd before the mercenary leader died in the hands of Canute.

Of course, Thorfinn succumbed to despair after Canute killed Askeladd because he no longer had a reason to keep on living. But he eventually found his resolve and became a powerful fighter that emerged stronger than ever after working as a slave for years. But how strong is Thorfinn in the manga?

During his younger years, Thorfinn excelled as a speedy fighter that focused more on his mobility and quickness rather than his size and physical strength. He was a smaller boy compared to Thors and his great-uncle Thorkell. But he used his somewhat small size and agility to good use by speed-blitzing his way through fights.

Thorfinn’s specialty as a fighter involved using his speed and quickness to attack his opponents’ vital spots instead of meeting them head-on in a clash of blades. He is fast enough to blitz his way through an entire battlefield to get to the commander. And the fact that he uses a pair of knives is what allows him to move as nimbly as he does.

Even though he lacked size and strength, Thorfinn was strong enough to give a gigantic man like Thorkell trouble because his speed advantage was useful for someone of his great-uncle’s size. And while he was eventually going to lose to Thorkell, Thorfinn was still skilled enough to take on the strongest living fighter in Vinland Saga.

However, after years of toiling as a slave, Thorfinn’s physical strength increased to levels that allowed him to throw grown men with only one arm. He also became strong enough to break the bones of a Viking that wore armor.

Because of his enhanced strength, Thorfinn was now strong enough to take on a fighter like Garm, who was also strong enough to give Thorkell a tough time in a fight. However, Thorfinn is yet to show that he has now reached Thorkell’s level. But it is safe to say that current Thorfinn would have been able to defeat Askeladd.

Will Thorfinn Ever Surpass Thors?

While we all know that Thorfinn has now reached incredible levels of strength, speed, and skills, the thing is that we haven’t seen Thors at his full strength. We did see Thors in battle during the opening scenes of Vinland Saga, but that wasn’t enough for us to see just how strong he is when he fights with everything he has.

All we know about Thors is that Thorkell openly admitted that the only man strong enough to defeat him was Thors. Thorkell, as we all know, is stronger than any of the other fighters in Vinland Saga. That means that Thors was on an entirely different level if Thorkell himself said that he was no match for Thorfinn’s father.

In that regard, it is tough for us to determine whether or not Thorfinn will ever be strong enough to surpass his father because we don’t know just how strong Thors was. The only thing we know about Thors is that he was stronger than Thorkell. But we don’t know how far the gap is between the two characters.

Nevertheless, the fact that Thors was able to disarm Askeladd quite easily despite the fact that Askeladd could have given Thorkell trouble means that the gap between him and Thorkell might be wide. So, if Thorfinn is yet to prove that he is stronger than Thorkell, that means that there is still a long way for him to go before he can surpass his father’s level or even reach it. But because we know that Thorfinn is steadily becoming stronger with every battle he fights, there is a good chance that he would eventually become as strong and as legendary as his father was.
