William Shatner, 94, Injured in Horse Accident and Now Facing Surgery

William Shatner, the legendary Star Trek icon, recently revealed that he suffered a significant injury after falling off one of his horses late last year. The 94-year-old actor opened up about the frightening accident during the 53rd annual Saturn Awards in Burbank, California, held on March 8.

While accepting a Hall of Fame award on behalf of the Star Trek franchise, he shared that the fall resulted in a shattered right shoulder. Shatner explained that the accident happened while he was engaged in his long-time passion for equestrian skills, specifically maneuvers that end in a fast sliding stop.

He noted that the horse he owned had a tendency to veer slightly to the side, and on this occasion, the movement sent him flying. “I’m not a young stuntman anymore,” he admitted, reflecting on the mishap. “I started to roll, but hit the dirt with my shoulder. So I wrecked my shoulder.”

Despite his age, the actor approached the situation with his characteristic humor and transparency. He explained that he was scheduled for a specialized procedure on March 11, describing it as a “new type of shoulder operation called a reverse something or other.”

He jokingly attempted to summarize the medical plan, saying, “You put the ball in the socket and the socket in the thing, and you come out 10 hours later, and you’re pain-free. So that’s what I am meandering towards.”

This recent health challenge follows another incident in September 2025, when the actor was briefly hospitalized due to issues with his blood sugar. At the time, he quickly assured fans that he was doing well, playfully referencing Mark Twain by stating that reports of his demise had been “greatly exaggerated.”

Known for his incredibly active lifestyle, Shatner has continued to participate in film and media projects well into his 90s, even making history in 2021 as the oldest person to travel to space, although that record has been broken by Ed Dwight.

Shatner remains a busy figure in Hollywood, frequently appearing at conventions and award ceremonies to celebrate his enduring legacy. Beyond his classic role as Captain James T. Kirk, he has garnered critical acclaim for his performance in the legal drama series Boston Legal and his voice work in numerous animated features.

Fans most recently saw him in the poignant documentary You Can Call Me Bill, which offers a deep, reflective look at his life and long-standing career. The Saturn Awards ceremony was a major event for the genre, featuring other industry giants like James Cameron and Tom Cruise.
