There are even some sources that ‘confirmed’ the release date of Winds of Winter, but the release date was never officially confirmed by anyone.
If you want to know everything confirmed regarding this novel including the release date of this highly anticipated novel, make sure to keep reading this article since it offers a brief breakdown of everything we know about this upcoming addition to the series.
What We Know About Winds Of Winter
Winds of Winter is the upcoming and highly anticipated sixth addition to the beloved fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, the same series that was adapted into HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones.
Georg R. R. Martin, the author of the series worked with the producers of the show to help them by writing the scripts for the part of the show and as a result, he neglected the original series a bit.
He announced that the show would come to an end before he managed to finish writing the series and most fans came to terms with the news, however after the underwhelming ending to the series many turned to the book series as a way to get closure with the series.
Although the fans learn that the ending of the book series and the TV show would be different before either ended, it’s been almost four years since the last season of Game of Thrones ended and we still know very little about the newest addition to the series.
However, to ease the frustration many fans felt due to how long they had to wait for the book with little to no news, Georg R. R. Martin released the first nine chapters for public viewing.
In addition to this, the fans have been informed that the circumstances all of us have found ourselves in over the last two years have forced the author to continue working on the book which resulted in significant improvements.
As it was already said, George R. R. Martin authorized Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to tweak the plot to change the destiny of some characters, but that doesn’t guarantee Martin’s written version will match Benioff and Weiss’ choices.
A Dance With Dragons concluded where Game of Thrones Season 5 ended: with Jon Snow’s death. The Winds of Winter is also the title of the Season 6 finale, in addition to being the title of the sixth book.
That was the episode in which Cersei unleashed a wildfire in the Sept of Baelor, murdering Margaery and Loras Tyrell, as well as the majority of the aristocracy in King’s Landing.
George R. R. Martin hasn’t clarified yet, but The Winds of Winter will at the very least have to deal with Jon Snow’s death and resurrection, as well as Cersei’s wildfire plot.
It’s unclear how closely the events in The Winds of Winter will resemble the plot of seasons seven and eight of Game of Thrones, however, it was hinted that he had three startling disclosures planned for the book series, including the death of Shireen Baratheon and the origin tale of Hodor. The last one will most likely be Jon Snow murdering Daenerys at the very end.
As for the very and we don’t know much about it or how much it will differentiate from the show’s ending, except for the fact that it will have some similarities as well as differences. Although many excitedly await any hints regarding the ending the author seems set on not revealing anything about it.
Aside from the aforementioned narrative aspects of the book, you can rest assured that the novels will remain independent. Sansa’s point of view will reportedly be included, so be prepared for perhaps surprising developments with the oldest Stark daughter.
You may also expect to see more of Arianne Martell and Dorne, a character and country that have been mostly ignored in the TV series but are clearly beloved by the author.
Certain notable scenes from the show, like Daenerys’ Battle at Meereen, which took up one-fourth of an episode in Season 6, but takes up multiple chapters in the Winds of Winter, will also be expanded upon in the next book.
Finally, based on George R. R. Martin’s announcements, we know that people who die in Game of Thrones will not die in the novels. This may imply that key characters like Mance Rayder, Stannis Baratheon, or even Catelyn Stark, who presently exists as Lady Stoneheart in the novels but hasn’t been revived on the show, would appear in The Winds of Winter or even play a key role regarding the final plot.
Another thing we got a little confirmation on, aside from the plot details, is the length of the book. The official page count has not been released, however, the author mentioned on several occasions that the last two books are shaping up to be quite long.
The most accurate guess we currently have regarding the length of the book is that it will be around 1500 pages long, but George R. R. Martin said that he would gladly add to the book if he finds it necessary after the draft has been finished.
Winds Of Winter Release Date
As of the time of writing this article, the official date of release for Winds of Winter has not been announced yet. Most people speculate that the novel should be finished by the end of the year and released sometime around the middle of 2022.
However, looking at his previous work we can conclude that there are no right guesses and the only person who could give the fans a correct estimate is George R. R. Martin himself.
George R. R. Martin has previously written at an extremely fast speed. When he was working on Storm of Swords, he produced 150 pages every month, but he isn’t writing as much currently.
The author has expressed his disappointment that his trip to Wellington has been canceled, but he plans to return in 2021 if both The Winds of Winter and Covid-19 are completed by then.
George R. R. Martin, who is known for always urging his readers to not keep their hopes up for the book they’ve been waiting for, has been known to work on other projects in the meantime.
However, the fact that he is working on his book again is excellent news. The Winds of Winter will be released someday, but in the meantime, fans may read the previous novels in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series or try some of Martin’s other works.
How Long Has George RR Martin Been Writing Winds Of Winter?
Given how anticipated this novel is, many fans may wonder how long has the author been working on this addition to the series. Although there is no way of knowing exactly there are a few clues that could help us figure out the answer to this question.
Before he started working on Winds of Winter, George R. R. Martin was working on the fifth installment of the series, A Dance with Dragons. The previous installment was officially released in 2011, right around the time when the first season of Game of Thrones was aired.
If George R. R. Martin started working on Winds of Winter the same year, that would mean he has been working on this novel for an entire decade. One thing to consider, however, is that he wasn’t working on the novel exclusively, but has been an important part of the production of Game of Thrones and took on many independent side projects during this time.
Why Is George R.R. Martin Writing Books So Slow?
George R.R. Martin is writing books so slow because he is a perfectionist and he has problems fitting everything into one cohesive story. His books have a huge number of characters and are huge.
Will George R.R. Martin Ever Finish a Song of Ice and Fire?
George R.R. Martin will probably never finish a Song of Ice and Fire. He is preoccupied with all the TV projects and studios all over are looking for his services. Also, he is a slow writer.
