Winona Ryder Reveals the Tragic Real-Life Event That Shaped Her ‘Stranger Things’ Performance
Winona Ryder recently opened up about a tragic event from her past that influenced her acting, particularly in Stranger Things.
In an interview with Interview magazine, the 54-year-old actress reflected on how playing a parent searching for a missing child in a supernatural world felt deeply personal to her.
โI had this experience when I was in my early twenties: there was a girl from the town that I grew up in. Her name was Polly Klaas and she was kidnapped. I knew her family,โ Ryder recalled.
โShe was missing for two months, and very tragically, she had been killed. I was doing whatever I could to help this family, to keep it in the news. When youโre around that kind of tangible grief, itโs otherworldly.โ
Ryder explained that Klaas, who dreamed of being an actress and loved the book Little Women, partly inspired her to take on the 1994 film adaptation of the novel. โThat was a big reason I did that movie and dedicated it to her,โ Ryder said.
Her experiences surrounding Klaasโ disappearance resurfaced when she began working on Stranger Things. โI was actually really freaked out with Stranger Things, because I wanted them to know how serious that is, and that you canโt use disappearances as a tool to advanceโit feels very personal,โ she said.
โI also talked to Pollyโs dad, and a lot of my performance in that first season was connected to him. I worked really, really hard that first season, and then the show took off in a way that I have certainly never been a part of. I remember having a moment that was really liberating and relieving, when I realized the show was no longer about me.โ
Ryderโs connection to Polly Klaas went beyond acting. In 1993, she offered a $200,000 reward to help find the missing girl. After Klaasโ death, Ryder dedicated her performance in Little Women to the young girlโs memory.
The kidnapping itself was a horrific crime. Polly Klaas, 12, was abducted at knifepoint during a slumber party at her motherโs home in Petaluma, California. Over the following two months, thousands searched for her before the perpetrator, Richard Allen Davis, was arrested and led authorities to her body. He was later convicted and sentenced to death.
Ryderโs firsthand exposure to such a tragic story helped shape her approach to roles involving missing or endangered children. Her performances in both Little Women and Stranger Things carry the weight of that real-life experience, giving them a depth that resonates with audiences.
