Shawn Levy Wanted a Wolverine Variant That Would Totally “Maul” Deadpool, Says He’s Saving it For a Sequel
Released over a week ago, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is breaking box-office records and receiving critical acclaim. The film not only marks Wolverine’s and Deadpool’s debut in the MCU but also brings back legacy Marvel characters like Garner’s Elektra, Snipes’ Blade, and Evans’ Human Torch.
The movie includes numerous Wolverine and Deadpool variants. One scene showcases Deadpool jumping between universes in search of the Wolverine who can save his reality. This sequence features notable cameos such as Old Man Logan, Age of Apocalypse Wolverine, comic-accurate Wolverine, and Cavillerine. However, a universe cut from the montage had a hidden connection to Wolverine’s history and is featured in the comics.
Shawn Levy, the film’s director, recently spoke with Josh Horowitz of Happy Sad Confused and revealed that one of his favored “variants” was cut from the movie. Levy described a scene featuring a Wolverine variant who would have gone on to maul Deadpool.
Number six and seven was an actual Wolverine. We really, really wanted an actual Wolverine, the animal, and then he would maul Deadpool. But, we came up with that idea too late to do a convincing digital wolverine, so that one is in my back pocket should I need one for a sequel.
The Wolverine variants received overwhelmingly positive reactions, with fans particularly enjoying “Short King” Wolverine and Cavillerine. However, some expressed disappointment that Danny DeVito’s Wolverine, a long-standing meme, wasn’t included.
Nonetheless, Levy appears to have ideas for a sequel, and we’re hopeful that a follow-up will be made. Even if it’s just a reel of amusing variants without a specific plot, it would be a hit.
