‘Wonder Man’ Hit Disney+’s Renewal Benchmark, but Got Axed Anyway, According to New Data

Cancellation decisions in streaming have always operated with a level of opacity that leaves both fans and industry analysts guessing at the real reasoning behind them. Nowhere has that frustration been more pronounced this year than with one Marvel series that appeared, by nearly every visible measure, to be doing exactly what a streaming show needs to do to survive.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Marvel comedy had already generated strong reviews and even landed a surprise Emmy nomination for its lead performance, giving it the kind of critical momentum most new streaming series can only hope for. That success made its eventual fate all the more puzzling once new industry data started painting a fuller picture of exactly how it compared to shows that actually got renewed.

According to a new report from data intelligence company Luminate, “Wonder Man” retained 52% of its audience across its first 12 weeks on Disney+, a figure that reportedly cleared the platform’s 36% renewal floor and landed comfortably above its 48% “safe zone” benchmark for new series, yet the show was still canceled. The report, released Friday, also found that broadcast networks renewed 65% of their series in 2025, compared to just 44% across major streaming services, upending the conventional wisdom that streaming would offer television’s best path to long-term survival.

Luminate’s data identifies audience retention, the rate at which viewers who start a series actually finish it, as a more meaningful success metric for streaming than raw viewership alone. The firm suggests 50% retention as a key general benchmark, and “Wonder Man” wasn’t the only recent cancellation to clear that bar. Prime Video’s “On Call” and Netflix’s “The Waterfront” both exceeded it as well, with “The Waterfront” posting an even stronger 62% retention rate before its own cancellation, something creator Kevin Williamson has said stemmed from engagement that didn’t build quickly enough.

Despite that overall strong showing, a closer look at Disney+-specific benchmarks reveals a narrower margin than the general 50% figure suggests. According to a separate Luminate analysis of streaming original slates, new Disney+ series typically need a retention rate of 53% or higher to be considered genuinely safe from cancellation, meaning “Wonder Man’s” 52% mark fell just one percentage point short of that internal threshold.

Even accounting for that narrower Disney+-specific benchmark, “Wonder Man’s” case remains genuinely unusual given the show’s broader trajectory. The series was initially renewed for a second season before being axed just a few months later, a reversal that raw viewership and retention data alone don’t fully explain. Cost-per-minute analysis has previously suggested the show’s engagement may have been considered soft relative to its budget compared to bigger-ticket Disney+ originals like “The Mandalorian,” even though its overall spend was comparatively modest.

Luminate’s report frames “Wonder Man” as part of a larger trend rather than an isolated anomaly, with the significant gap between broadcast and streaming renewal rates suggesting the two mediums operate under fundamentally different pressures. Broadcast networks benefit from more limited budgets, fixed programming slots, and simpler viewership data, all of which make renewal decisions comparatively straightforward compared to the more opaque calculus streaming platforms appear to apply.

With retention data increasingly suggesting that solid completion rates alone aren’t enough to guarantee survival, “Wonder Man’s” cancellation offers a telling case study in just how unpredictable modern streaming renewal decisions have become.
