Woody Harrelson Reveals the Wine-Fueled Confession That Made Him Question if Matthew McConaughey Is His Brother

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey have spent nearly three decades building one of Hollywood’s most enduring friendships, ever since meeting on the set of 1999’s ‘EDtv.’ Fans have long joked about their uncanny physical resemblance, a comparison the two actors have leaned into themselves over the years rather than brushing aside.

That running joke took a genuinely strange turn back in 2023, when McConaughey first revealed on SiriusXM’s ‘Let’s Talk Off Camera’ that his mother had made a suggestive comment to Harrelson during a family vacation in Greece, one that hinted at a much closer connection between their families than either actor had ever suspected. The comment set off years of speculation, jokes, and even a planned Apple TV Plus series built around the mystery.

Now, in a new interview, Harrelson has walked through his own side of that pivotal moment in detail, offering fans the clearest picture yet of exactly how the bombshell unfolded and how he reacted to it in real time.

“Quite frankly, MaMac, Matthew’s mother, told me, I’d known her 25 years and then she told me: ‘I knew your father,'” Harrelson told Variety in an interview published August 21. Harrelson described the comment as landing with obvious emphasis, recalling how his own reaction shifted from confusion to genuine suspicion once he processed what she’d actually implied.

According to Harrelson, “MaMac,” as he affectionately calls Mary Kathlene McConaughey, was in a relaxed, talkative mood at the time thanks to some Kendall-Jackson wine. “She tells me [that information], and I’m thinking, ‘Well, what’s behind this story?'” Harrelson continued. “And then I find out they weren’t just friends, there was a little more to it.”

McConaughey has offered his own account of the same Greece conversation in past interviews, recalling his mother saying, “Woody, I knew your dad,” with a deliberate pause after “knew” that immediately caught everyone’s attention. He’s said the two families went on to “do some math,” discovering that Harrelson’s father, Charles, was on furlough from prison around the same time McConaughey’s parents were going through their second divorce, adding that there may be “possible receipts” placing the two in the same part of West Texas during that window.

Charles Harrelson, a convicted killer, died in prison in 2007 while serving a life sentence for murder. McConaughey’s father, James Donald McCabe, passed away in 1992 after marrying McConaughey’s mother three separate times throughout their relationship.

Rather than settling the question privately, Harrelson and McConaughey have chosen to turn their possible sibling connection into entertainment, developing an Apple TV Plus comedy series in which the two play fictionalized versions of themselves navigating what McConaughey has described as a story “based on truth.” Neither actor has confirmed plans for an actual DNA test to resolve the mystery once and for all, leaving the question of their biological connection technically unanswered even as their public friendship continues deepening.

For two actors already this close, both personally and professionally, the possibility of an actual blood connection has only added another layer to one of Hollywood’s most talked-about friendships. Whether the truth ever gets confirmed outside of a scripted television series remains to be seen.
