Wunmi Mosaku is taking a quiet moment in the middle of a very loud year. In a new feature with Essence, the award-winning actress steps away from red carpets and film premieres to focus on calm, identity, and balance.

The magazine highlights a softer side of Mosaku. The images focus on stillness and strength. The shoot reflects her roots and her journey from Manchester to becoming one of the most respected actors in the industry. Magazine presents the feature as a space where peace is power, and Mosaku fits that message well.

This feature arrives during a major awards season for the 39-year-old star. She recently won a BAFTA for her role as Annie in Sinners.

The film, directed by Ryan Coogler, has become a worldwide success. It earned more than $350 million at the global box office and received 16 Oscar nominations. In the film, Mosaku stars with Michael B. Jordan and Jayme Lawson in a story set in the American South during the Jim Crow era.

In the interview, Mosaku spoke about the importance of feeling supported on set. I felt safe and respected, she said. She explained that this environment helped her give stronger performances and take creative risks.

She also shared how working with costume designer Ruth E. Carter shaped her process. The way Ms. Ruth works is such a layered process that I liken to the Michelangelo quote, Mosaku said. She then added, The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work; it is already there; I just have to chisel away the superfluous material. That idea helped her build the character of Annie in a careful and thoughtful way.

After Sinners, Mosaku is moving into a very different story. She has joined the cast of The Social Reckoning, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. The film follows the events inside Facebook after the 2021 whistleblower scandal. She will appear alongside Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Jeremy Strong. The movie is set to be released on October 9, which marks sixteen years since The Social Network first premiered.

Mosaku’s ability to slow down and reflect while reaching new career highs makes her stand out even more. She seems focused not just on success, but on growth. What do you think about her recent work and her upcoming role in Aaron Sorkin’s new film? Share your thoughts in the comments.
