X-Men Reboot Buzz Grows as Angel and Iceman Reportedly Join Marvel’s Mutant Roster
Marvel Studios has spent years teasing the arrival of mutants in the MCU, and the wait appears to be nearing its end. The film is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2028 or 2029, landing firmly in Phase 7 of the MCU, and the casting puzzle has been coming together piece by piece over the past several weeks. Fans have been picking apart every scrap of information as Marvel inches closer to what could be a defining moment for its next era of storytelling.
That anticipation has only grown heading into this week’s D23 Expo. D23 returns to Anaheim from August 14 through 16, and this year the event carries extra weight for Marvel watchers given the nonstop speculation surrounding the untitled reboot. Reporting from The Hollywood Reporter’s newsletter suggests Marvel could be gearing up for a major casting announcement at the Disney Entertainment Showcase, and fans are hoping this is finally the moment the rumor mill turns into official confirmation.
Now a new wrinkle has entered the conversation. ComicBook.com shared a report citing scooper James Mack, who claimed to have information on the actors being eyed for Angel and Iceman in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ film. The industry insider said he was hearing word about the actors for Angel and Iceman, and fans were especially excited to learn that Warren Worthington and Bobby Drake are apparently part of the movie at all, since neither character had been heavily discussed in prior casting chatter.
Both characters carry serious weight in X-Men lore. Warren Worthington III, known as Angel, is one of the original members of the X-Men, born into wealth but gifted with enormous feathered wings that let him fight alongside his fellow mutants with flight and aerial combat skills. Bobby Drake, better known as Iceman, is another founding member of the team and one of the most powerful mutants around, capable of manipulating temperature and generating massive amounts of ice despite his easygoing personality.
Their inclusion would line up with what multiple outlets have already reported about the film’s direction. The ‘X-Men’ reboot is reportedly focusing on the original five mutants in a coming of age story featuring Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel, with Marvel said to be keeping the roster smaller and more focused rather than overcrowding it right away. Wolverine is reportedly being left out of this initial lineup entirely, allowing the other mutants room to establish themselves first.
Casting for the film has been trickling out steadily. Samara Weaving landed the role of Emma Frost, becoming the first trade confirmed casting of a specific mutant beyond Sadie Sink, who is already set to play Jean Grey. Kit Connor has also reportedly been cast as Scott Summers, or Cyclops, after a small group of actors tested in early July. Despite all this momentum, zero casting rumors have surfaced yet for either Angel or Iceman specifically, which makes the timing of this new report especially intriguing.
With D23 unfolding this week and Marvel reportedly racing to lock down its full ensemble, the possibility of Angel and Iceman joining the fold adds another layer of excitement to an already stacked rumor cycle. Whether these two founding X-Men actually make the cut, and who might end up playing them, remains to be seen. Do you think Angel and Iceman deserve a spot in Marvel’s rebooted mutant team, and who would you cast as Warren Worthington and Bobby Drake?
