Few casting announcements in recent memory have generated the kind of sustained buzz that has followed Maya Boyd since Marvel Studios named her its new Storm. During Marvel’s D23 presentation in Anaheim, California, Kevin Feige revealed the cast of the upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot, with Boyd set to take on the role previously portrayed by Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp. Ever since, the young performer has become one of the most closely watched names in the franchise’s next chapter.

Much of that attention has played out on social media, where Boyd has embraced her new mutant identity with obvious delight. She updated her Instagram bio with 3 lightning bolt emojis just hours after the announcement, and her audience reportedly jumped to nearly 100,000 followers within hours. She also thanked fans in a post of her own, writing that it was an honor to be their Storm.

Her latest share may be the most on-the-nose one yet. In a photo posted to Instagram, Boyd is seen gazing up at a towering street mural of Ororo Munroe, complete with flowing white hair and the X insignia across her chest, alongside a playful “oh hello there” caption.

It’s a simple moment, but it lands because it shows the actress meeting the character she’s about to inhabit at full, larger-than-life scale. Fans have spent weeks drawing that very comparison, and one even went viral by placing her photo beside a comic book illustration of Storm, arguing the 2 looked like the same person.

Before Marvel came calling, Boyd was building a reputation on stage. She made her Broadway debut in the revival of ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ and later took over the leading role of Juliet in ‘& Juliet’. She also acted alongside Taraji P. Henson in an adaptation of ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’.

‘X-Men’ will mark her first major screen role, and it carries real cultural weight. Boyd would become the first darker-skinned actress to portray Storm in a live-action feature film, bringing the character’s appearance closer to her comic-book depiction. Halle Berry played Storm across 4 films between 2000 and 2014, while Alexandra Shipp took over for a younger version of the character in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’.

The mural photo is just the latest window into how seriously Boyd is approaching the role. She previously posted an image on her Instagram story of herself holding a thick stack of Storm comics, including recent issues from Marvel’s ongoing Storm solo series along with older releases tied to the character’s arc.

She has also been sharing glimpses of a trip to Kenya as part of her preparation, a fitting destination given that Ororo is the daughter of a Kenyan princess and an American photojournalist in the comics. For longtime readers who care deeply about the character’s roots, that kind of research goes a long way.

She has even earned a vote of confidence from the original. Speaking with PEOPLE at the Create & Cultivate Festival in Los Angeles, Berry offered an enthusiastic endorsement of the actress taking over the weather-controlling mutant. Berry made clear that her version of Ororo Munroe belongs to her, while Boyd should be free to build a different one for Marvel Studios.

Boyd won’t be carrying the reboot alone. The untitled ‘X-Men’ movie is directed by Jake Schreier, and she’ll play Storm alongside Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Inde Navarrette as Rogue, with Adam Driver also announced.

Plenty remains under wraps, as Marvel hasn’t yet revealed what the movie’s story will cover or how Storm will look on screen. The film is currently set to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028, which leaves a long runway for moments like this one to keep the excitement building.

If this is how Boyd intends to spend the wait, fans seem more than happy to follow along. Every new post seems to bring the comic-page Storm and the actress playing her a little closer together.

How excited are you to see Maya Boyd play Storm in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot?
