‘Yaga’ Sneak Peek Confirms October Premiere Date, and the Baba Yaga Reimagining Looks Deliciously Unsettling

Slavic folklore has never quite gotten the prestige-television treatment, but that is about to change. Between witches, missing heirs, and small coastal towns hiding dark secrets, AMC+’s newest genre bet is leaning hard into atmosphere over jump scares, and horror fans have been paying close attention since the first teaser dropped over the summer.

The series in question is ‘YAGA,’ a contemporary reimagining of the legendary witch Baba Yaga, and it has already built a reputation as one of the more intriguing entries in AMC’s growing slate of supernatural programming. Created by playwright Kat Sandler and based on her own stage production, the show blends mystery-thriller plotting with folklore-inflected dread in a way that feels distinct from AMC’s other witchy offerings.

Now the wait for a release date is officially over. A new sneak peek shared by Nexus Point News confirms that the first two episodes of ‘YAGA’ will premiere on October 23 on AMC+, with the show’s ensemble cast led by Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid, Clark Backo, and Hudson Williams.

‘YAGA’ follows Rapp, a private investigator played by Reid, who arrives in the small coastal town of Whittock to investigate the disappearance of Henry Park, a young heir to a powerful fishery played by Williams. According to a report from Give Me My Remote, the premiere will drop two episodes at once before new episodes roll out weekly, with the season wrapping on a two-episode finale on November 27.

Rapp’s investigation quickly tangles him up with Carson, a wary local detective played by Backo, and Katherine, a magnetic university professor with a taste for younger men played by Moss. The eight-episode, half-hour drama promises a slow unraveling of secret lives, ancient magic, and a web of suspects who are not what they appear to be.

Backo has described the series as a mystery thriller examining “what kind of power it might take to overcome those who think they’re untouchable.” That framing lines up with the show’s central conceit: reworking Baba Yaga, a figure who in folklore is either a monstrous child-eating witch or a helpful old woman depending on who is telling the story, into a modern power struggle.

Moss, best known for ‘The Matrix’ and her more recent role in ‘FUBAR,’ plays the show’s most enigmatic figure, and her casting alongside newcomer Hudson Williams has already generated buzz. Williams, who broke out earlier this year in ‘Heated Rivalry,’ is taking on his first major role since that series, and early first-look images have drawn attention for the chemistry between his and Moss’s characters.

The project has a long road behind it. ‘YAGA’ was originally developed for the Canadian streamer Crave, where it will also premiere on October 23, before AMC Global Media acquired the exclusive U.S. streaming rights for its AMC+ debut. The series has additionally been picked up internationally, with Sky airing it in the United Kingdom and Ireland and HBO Max carrying it across the rest of Europe.

With genre television leaning increasingly toward slow-burn psychological dread rather than straightforward horror, ‘YAGA’ seems positioned to capture some of the same audience that has embraced shows like ‘A Discovery of Witches’ and ‘Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches.’ Whether Sandler’s folklore-rooted mystery can carve out its own identity within that crowded field will become clear once the first two episodes land next month.
