Hilary Swank has had quite the week. The 2-time Oscar winner announced she’s expecting her third child with husband Philip Schneider, sharing the news on Instagram with a playful animated video of glowing stick figures and a caption joking that her next project “releases in December.”

The baby will join big siblings Aya and Ohm, the twins Swank welcomed in April 2023. A day after her announcement, she was out and about in New York City, where she taped an appearance on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ and talked candidly about the backlash women face for having children later in life.

But one moment from her busy Thursday has stolen the spotlight. In video captured by TMZ, Swank was signing autographs for fans waiting outside a building in New York when one exchange quickly turned into a comedy of errors.

The trouble started with a simple question. Swank, ready to personalize an autograph, asked one fan, “Who do you want it to?” When the woman stayed silent, the actor followed up with, “To who?”

The fan replied that she only needed a signature. That posed a problem, since Swank had already started writing. “I already wrote, ‘To.’ Do you have a name?” she asked. Swank even turned to the people around them to see if anyone knew the woman’s name, but nobody did.

After asking again, and a few painfully awkward seconds, the actor finally exclaimed, “Just tell me your name!” The standoff did end well. The fan finally gave her name, Eleni, and Swank wrote it down to finish the autograph.

According to TMZ, the woman wasn’t the only one who made things tricky. A second autograph seeker didn’t fare much better, leaving Swank visibly puzzled as she tried to keep things moving.

Some coverage of the clip suggested the fan may have been a professional autograph seeker, someone who collects signatures to resell to collectors. Personalized autographs are typically harder to resell, which could explain her hesitation, though that wasn’t confirmed.

Before the awkward moment unfolded, Swank was in good spirits and happy to chat about her pregnancy. When asked about her cravings, she didn’t hesitate. “Rice Krispie treats!” she said.

The cheerful exchange matched the mood she’s shown all week. Photos from her Thursday outing showed her smiling and waving to photographers, clearly enjoying the excitement around her big news.

That same day, Swank’s conversation with Drew Barrymore made headlines of its own. During the taping, she addressed the double standard women face when they have children later in life.

“There’s a lot of backlash women get for having children older but not men, which is interesting,” Swank said, according to Page Six. The episode is set to air October 20. Between her heartfelt comments on motherhood and her very relatable autograph mishap, it’s been a memorable few days for the actor.

If anything, the clip shows that even an Oscar winner can find herself stuck in an awkward conversation on a New York sidewalk. Online, viewers have largely praised how Swank handled the moment. Rather than walking away, she kept her sense of humor and stuck with it until she could finish the autograph properly.
