Zack Snyder has spent years keeping the memory of his daughter Autumn alive, both through his work and through his support for suicide prevention. The filmmaker regularly honors Autumn’s memory through public tributes and charitable efforts, and his fans have often joined him.

The loss changed the course of one of his biggest projects. Autumn died on March 12, 2017, at just 20 years old, and in May 2017, Snyder stepped down during production of ‘Justice League’, with Joss Whedon hired to finish the film.

This week, Snyder marked the passage of time with a deeply personal post. He shared an image of Autumn posing with his ‘Man of Steel’ star Henry Cavill in costume, writing that a father’s love for his daughter never ends, and that there are no words for the heartbreak of losing a child or the emptiness that lasts a lifetime.

The picture itself struck a chord with fans. The tribute featured a never-before-seen moment with Cavill in full Superman costume, and the post received overwhelming support from fans and fellow creators within hours.

Snyder also shared how present Autumn remains in his life. He wrote that the love and memories never fade, called her his family’s heroic archer, and said she will always be loved and remain part of everything he does.

The tribute came with a purpose. Snyder shared that the family will take part in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk in Pasadena, California, on Saturday, November 7, as Team Ironwill in her honor.

He also asked fans to help if they could. In his post, Snyder encouraged followers to consider donating, explaining that the money helps fund life-saving research, suicide prevention education, and support for families who have lost someone they love. The family’s team page notes that even after all these years, Autumn’s absence is something they feel every day.

Snyder’s supporters have a long history of standing behind this cause. The #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement formed after Snyder stepped down from ‘Justice League’ following the loss of Autumn, and the network came together to support the Snyder family, raise awareness for suicide prevention and push for the release of Snyder’s version of the film.

The results have been remarkable. That global network of fans reached the milestone of raising $500,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The campaign eventually paid off on screen as well. ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ was released on HBO Max in the United States on March 18, 2021, and the film is dedicated to Autumn’s memory.

The tribute extends into the film’s music, too. Family friend Allison Crowe performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” Autumn’s favorite song, for the end credits, and she had also performed it at Autumn’s funeral.

Years later, Snyder’s message makes it clear that his grief and his love for his daughter remain as strong as ever, and that he hopes her memory can continue to help other families.
