‘Zmora’ Episode 5 Recap and Ending Explained
The latest chapter of ‘Zmora’ draws the crime drama’s two timelines closer together and ends on an image that raises more questions than it settles. The installment reached HBO Max on 30 October, one week before the final episode is scheduled to arrive on 6 November. The series runs for six episodes of roughly forty five minutes each.
This ‘Zmora’ episode recap and ending explained guide covers the family secrets that surface and what the closing scene suggests about the missing boy at the center of the story. Magdalena Cielecka plays journalist Kama Kossowska, who gets drawn into the disappearance of a childhood friend after Tomasz Korcz and his cold case team reopen the file. The story begins when Kama returns to her hometown of Toruń for a high school reunion, with her public image damaged by a video circulating online.
The ‘Zmora’ Episode Recap and the Anonymous Letters
The episode begins with Kama consulting Korcz, played by Piotr Żurawski, about the anonymous letters she has been receiving. A photograph the detective shows her becomes the pretext for a flashback. The official HBO synopsis adds that Kama finally learns who sent the letters, although the truth slips away from her once again.
At the same time, the situation inside the Nitecki household grows more strained. New leads then take Kama and Korcz to Piotrek’s mother, who shares a secret capable of changing Kama’s life for good.
Seeking comfort after the shock, Kama confides in Robert, and their talk stirs memories of the summer of 1994 and the events that preceded Piotrek’s disappearance. As the pieces fall into place, she is left facing the question she fears most, whether she played a bigger part in the old tragedy than she ever assumed.
The Flashback Behind the Ending
The flashback is set in 1981, when the Knap, Bąk and Kosowski families gather and it comes out that Kama’s mother is taking medication prescribed by Ryszard. The drugs visibly leave her dazed, and Spider’s Web suggests this may be why Barbara takes her young daughter and jumps from a bridge. Both of them survive.
Afterward, Waldemar Kosowski resolves to make sure such a thing never happens again and discusses with friends whether his wife would be better off in prison or in a psychiatric ward. He instead chooses a grim solution and strangles her.
After the killing he drives while intoxicated and crashes into a tree. The sequence confirms that Barbara did not die in a car accident.
‘Zmora’ Ending Explained and the Hospital Scene
The final scene moves to a hospital where Kama’s father has been admitted after a suicide attempt. Spider’s Web describes him as most likely the missing puzzle piece that will show what really happened to Piotrek Knap.
The episode itself does not confirm that theory. The same outlet notes that the outcome of the investigation will be revealed in the final episode.
Viewers who have read Małecki’s novel have already begun debating its conclusion on Filmweb’s forum, with one commenter calling the book’s resolution surprising and another finding it weakly motivated. Another commenter noted that nobody yet knows how the series will resolve the story and that the adaptation may change everything.
What the ‘Zmora’ Finale Still Has to Resolve
A Filmweb review of the full season says the ending does not close every thread and leaves room for a continuation. The same critic found the conclusion satisfying yet fairly easy to predict, since the suspects look suspicious from the first episode.
Serialowa felt that the opening four episodes seemed to circle in place, with the investigation advancing slowly. The same review added that the penultimate installment is the first to start laying cards on the table. Na Ekranie gave the run of episodes up to this point a middling score and described a persistent feeling of familiarity. Spider’s Web took the opposite view and called the series an excellent crime drama whose layered intrigue grew more gripping with each installment.
Serialomaniak observed that the main investigation lands better from about the fourth episode onward, as the police dig deeper and the consequences spread among the characters. That review also singled out Katarzyna Bujakiewicz for using her few scenes to portray a complicated family. Polityka described the show as solid and smooth entertainment that reflects the dominant trend in streaming production.
Filmweb’s reviewer credited director Łukasz Jaworski with guiding viewers smoothly through a story split across two timelines and full of flashbacks. The series is produced by Opus TV, the studio behind ‘Kruk’ and ‘Klangor’, for TVN Warner Bros. Discovery. Readers who have followed Kama’s search this far are welcome to say in the comments whether her father’s hospital bed holds the answer to Piotrek’s disappearance or whether the finale still has a twist about her own role in the summer of 1994.
