Zoe Saldaña Breaks Down That Gut-Punch ‘Lioness’ Finale, and She Wants Answers Too

Taylor Sheridan’s shows have built a reputation for putting their characters through the wringer, but few finales have landed quite as emotionally devastating as this season’s send-off for one of television’s toughest CIA leaders. Fans spent the entire third season watching Joe fight tooth and nail just to make it home alive.

That fight, unfortunately, didn’t end the way anyone hoped. After surviving an abduction and a desperate rescue mission, Joe finally made it back to her front door in the finale, only to discover an empty house and a note revealing her husband had taken their daughters and left.

Now, star Zoe Saldaña is opening up about that gut-wrenching moment, and she’s just as eager for answers as the fans left reeling by it. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Saldaña revealed she’d actually been advocating for this exact outcome throughout the season, even calling creator Taylor Sheridan directly while he was writing it.

“I just kept calling Taylor as he was writing this season and sharing with him, ‘I don’t know why he would stay,'” Saldaña said in her interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I am grateful to Taylor that he gave Neal the f—ing strength to leave her in order for him to make a point. Because, if not, Joe’s a machine, she would’ve never stopped.”

That perspective reframes the devastating twist not as pure tragedy, but as a necessary gut check for a character who’s spent three seasons sacrificing everything for her mission. Saldaña seems genuinely invested in seeing Joe forced to confront her humanity rather than remaining an unstoppable force indefinitely.

As if the collapse of Joe’s marriage wasn’t enough, the season’s final moments delivered one more gut punch. The episode revealed that Aaliyah Amrohi, the villain from the show’s very first season, was actually behind Joe’s kidnapping all along, and she’s coming back for another attempt.

That combination of personal and professional devastation has left Saldaña firmly convinced the story isn’t finished. She’s expressed her belief that the cliffhanger “deserves an explanation,” essentially campaigning alongside fans for the show to get the chance to resolve what it just set in motion.

Despite the overwhelming fan demand and cast enthusiasm, Paramount+ has not yet officially renewed ‘Lioness’ for a fourth season. Given that Season 3’s renewal itself didn’t arrive until roughly ten months after Season 2 premiered, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts among the show’s stacked cast, a similar wait for Season 4 wouldn’t be entirely surprising.

Saldaña isn’t the only cast member publicly pushing for renewal. Co-star Nicole Kidman has also urged fans to make noise about wanting more episodes, telling EW in a separate post-finale interview that she remains deeply passionate about the show and believes it continues to resonate more as new viewers discover it.

With no confirmed release date and a mounting list of unresolved storylines, from Joe’s fractured family to Aaliyah’s looming return, fans are left in the same uncomfortable limbo the finale seemed designed to create. Saldaña previously mentioned signing on for at least three seasons, leaving her own future with the franchise similarly uncertain beyond what’s already aired.
