‘Zootopia 2’ Already Surpassed One of Marvel’s Biggest Box Office Hits in China
Disney’s Zootopia 2 is making waves at the global box office, particularly in China, where it has already earned more than Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War did during its entire run. The film has quickly become the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood release ever in the country.
Since its release, Zootopia 2 has collected $177 million in the United States and Canada. In other countries, it has made $485 million, bringing its worldwide total to $662 million as of December 5.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend in the U.S., the film was initially expected to reach $125 million domestically and $270 million worldwide over five days.
It exceeded those expectations, earning $158 million in North America and $560.3 million globally in its first weekend. This performance gave the animated sequel the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film worldwide and the fourth-highest overall. Its three-day opening in the U.S. and Canada totaled $100.3 million.
China has been a major driver of Zootopia 2’s success. The film earned $271.6 million during its opening weekend there. Notably, it became the first Hollywood film to make over $100 million in a single day in the Chinese market, with Saturday, November 29, setting the record.
By comparison, Infinity War earned $382.7 million outside North America from 52 markets and was number one in all of them. Its international opening was the second-highest ever, behind The Fate of the Furious. IMAX screenings contributed $18.5 million to its international total, surpassing The Force Awakens outside North America and China.
Zootopia 2’s success shows the growing importance of China for Hollywood films and the increasing power of animated releases to perform strongly worldwide.
