‘Zootopia 2’ Breaks Records in China with Historic Hollywood Opening
Disney’s Zootopia 2 is breaking records across the globe, with huge openings in both the United States and China. The film earned a massive $556 million worldwide over its first five days, surpassing the previous record of $378 million set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie for the biggest extended opening weekend for an animated film, according to Deadline Hollywood.
In North America, Zootopia 2 brought in $156 million over the five-day Thanksgiving period, making it the second-biggest launch ever during the holiday weekend, just behind last year’s Moana 2, which made $225 million.
China has been a major driver of the film’s success. On Saturday alone, the movie earned $104 million, beating Avengers: Endgame for the highest single-day total for a Hollywood film in the country. Its five-day total in China reached $272 million. Industry observers say the film could exceed $500 million in China and might even challenge Endgame’s record of $632 million for the highest total ever in the Chinese market for a Hollywood movie.
Zootopia 2, known as Zootropolis 2 in some countries, is an animated buddy cop comedy from Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, written by Bush, and produced by Yvett Merino. Many stars from the first film returned, including Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Shakira, Idris Elba, Alan Tudyk, Nate Torrence, Don Lake, Bonnie Hunt, and Jenny Slate. New cast members include Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Patrick Warburton, Quinta Brunson, and Danny Trejo. The story follows Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they try to solve a mystery involving a new reptilian resident in Zootopia named Gary De’Snake.

Early projections expected $125 million in the U.S. and Canada and $270 million globally for the five-day weekend, but by the end of the period, estimates rose to $175 million domestically and $525 million worldwide.
In China, Zootopia 2 has become a major hit, marking the first time a Hollywood movie earned more than $100 million in a single day in the country. By November 30, the film had grossed $268 million in China alone.
