Zootopia 2 is having a massive run at the global box office and is now one of Disney’s biggest animated hits ever.

According to box office reports, the film has passed $1.4 billion worldwide, placing it as the second highest-grossing movie in the history of Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is also one of the top animated releases of 2025.

One of the most surprising achievements came from China. Industry tracking data shows that Zootopia 2 has sold more than 100 million tickets in a single market, something no Hollywood film has done since Titanic. The movie has already earned around $550 million in China alone, making it one of the strongest Hollywood releases in the country in recent years.

The sequel, produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, brings back Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde for another case in the city of Zootopia. This time, the pair are on the run while trying to clear their names as they chase a new suspect.

The film is written by Jared Bush and directed by Bush alongside Byron Howard. Many familiar voices returned, including Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, along with several new cast members.

Zootopia 2 premiered in Hollywood in mid-November and opened in U.S. theaters just before Thanksgiving. It delivered a huge holiday debut, posting one of the largest opening weekends ever for an animated movie. Global numbers climbed fast, and the film crossed the $1 billion mark in less than three weeks after release, according to studio figures.

Critics responded positively overall. Rotten Tomatoes reports a strong approval rating, with its consensus saying, “Cleverly laying a thoughtful message onto another crackerjack caper while solidifying Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as one of the most endearing buddy pairings in ages, Zootopia 2 more than justifies a return trip to the big city.”

Audience response was also strong. CinemaScore surveys gave the movie an A grade, matching the score of the original film, while PostTrak data showed high recommendation numbers.

With this level of success, talk of a third movie has picked up speed. The directors have already confirmed that early work has begun on ideas for another sequel. A post-credits tease in the film has also fueled fan excitement about where the story could go next.
