If there’s one thing ‘9-1-1’ fans have learned over the years, it’s that no disaster is too outlandish for Station 118. The ABC drama has built its reputation on jaw-dropping season openers, and last year’s premiere famously kicked off with a meteor shower. Now, the ‘9-1-1’ Season 10 trailer reveals the show is somehow going even bigger.

The milestone season has been a long time coming. ABC renewed the series for a 10th season on March 5, and the show returns on Thursday, October 15, at 8/7c. The premiere will be followed by the Season 2 debut of ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ and the Season 23 premiere of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.

On October 2, several outlets shared the first full trailer for the new season, which runs just over a minute and a half. The footage confirms what an earlier teaser had hinted: a volcano erupts right in the middle of Los Angeles.

The trailer delivers on that premise in a big way. A wide shot of the city shows an erupting volcano rising out of the ground among buildings and skyscrapers. Every firehouse is sent out to deal with the damage, and Maddie warns that the city simply has no protocol for a volcano.

The stakes get personal, too. The trailer reveals that Athena Grant goes missing amid the dangerous conditions, putting one of the show’s most beloved characters directly in harm’s way.

The disaster begins with something more ordinary before turning catastrophic. “We’re starting with a giant sinkhole that, of course, turns into a volcano,” showrunner Tim Minear told TV Insider, adding with a laugh that the storyline was already in development when a real sinkhole opened up in West Hollywood in July.

The original plan was to have the sinkhole open near the city’s famous La Brea Tar Pits. Instead, Minear explained, the crisis will erupt at an invented downtown intersection that will likely look familiar to viewers. He described the multi-episode emergency as quite catastrophic for the public and for the Station 118 heroes once they descend into the sinkhole.

Minear also shared that the storyline draws inspiration from the 1997 disaster movie ‘Volcano’. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he joked that this time, Athena won’t need help from Charlton Heston

Beyond the lava, several characters are entering new chapters. Athena is still finding her footing as a detective, using her instincts to crack a mysterious new case, while May gains confidence in a new job.

There’s also emotional fallout to explore. Athena is navigating life after the loss of her husband, Bobby, whose death continues to shape the series. Meanwhile, Eddie has been mentoring Buck through some personal struggles, which Minear says will cause some tension and friction between the 2.

Reaction to the trailer has been immediate, with DiscussingFilm’s post gathering thousands of likes within hours. For longtime viewers, the over-the-top premise is exactly what they’ve come to love about the series. With a volcano, a missing Athena, and big personal changes for the 118, Season 10 looks poised to open with one of the show’s most ambitious disasters yet.
