German cinematography has always been one of the most interesting and influential and has never stopped making interesting movies. From dramas and war movies to comedies and thrillers, always with a great story, unforgettable characters, and excellent directing, often with a high artistic note. Netflix offers its audience numerous European movies, constantly updating and adding new movies and tv-series and on this list we are going to write about the 10 best German movies on that platform.

All Quiet On the Western Front (2022)

This excellent war drama All Quiet On the Western Front, was based on one of the greatest novels ever, written by Erich Maria Remarque and it takes us back to World War I where we witness a young German soldier’s horrifying experiences on the western front.

It is the story of teenagers Paul Bäumer and his friends Albert and Müller who voluntarily enlist in the German army, confident and ready to defend their country. But they soon learn that life on the front is so much crueler and more difficult than they could have ever imagined. 

The Colony (2021)

This sci-fi action adventure is set in the distant future and it introduces us to a female astronaut who finds herself shipwrecked somewhere on Earth, suddenly responsible for the destiny of the remaining population.

After remaining alone and without her crew, Blake will meet various different individuals, connected in some way, all reluctant to live a life much different from the ones they are used to and soon she will find herself sharing their opinions. 

Army of Thieves (2021)

This is a prequel set six years before The Army of the Dead where we meet and follow a shy small-town banker Sebastian who leads a lonely life during a virus outbreak in Las Vegas. He will soon find himself in the middle of the heist of the century.

Sebastian is fascinated with locks and safes and is about to become a member of the crew responsible for performing this heist. His whole life changes when a mysterious woman named Gwendoline asks him to join her team. They are about to embark on a mission across Europe, while the situation in Las Vegas is getting more complicated day by day.

Rising High (2020)

This comedy-drama centers on three corrupt real estate agents who suddenly become extremely wealthy but don’t know how to deal with the huge amount of money they are presented with. 

Viktor, Gerry, and Nikole have found a way to make money out of the property market in Berlin but after succeeding in earning it, they will very soon start using it for various illegal purposes, succumbing to greed.

Rock My Heart (2017)

This tv-drama shows the strength of a young woman faced with a terrible life situation that soon won’t allow her to make her own decisions and enjoy the beauty surrounding her. Lena is a 17-year-old teenager with a congenital heart disease. 

Her condition is fatal but she wants to fight her destiny, accepting every adventure on her way and making decisions that her parents don’t agree with. But it is her life and they will have to deal with their daughter’s choices.

The Four of Us (2021)

This romantic drama comedy centers around two couples who decide to make a swap and live with their friends’ partners for four weeks. They meet in a remote beach house after four days of not hearing from each other.

Faced with numerous changes in their relationships and their relations in general, they realize that everything has changed and that they can’t go back to the life they led before. All their actions are put to a test, their feelings will have to be reexamined and they will realize that they have to reevaluate their expectation regarding themselves and their relationships.

Black Island (2021)

This mysterious story takes us to a North Sea island where we follow Jonas, a high school graduate who moves there to live with his grandfather after the tragic death of his parents. His life will take a completely unexpected turn when he meets the residents of this small island.

The arrival of Helena, the new german teacher will turn his life upside down since he will begin to develop feelings he hasn’t felt before and the unusual teacher will recognize and encourage his writing talent, only to make him fall in love. Helena is not an ordinary woman and there is so much more behind her devoted behavior toward Jonas.

Schubert in Love (2016)

Olaf is an interesting man who is always full of new and remarkable ideas but has never had time for his personal life, including finding a girlfriend. He is also the last descendant of the Schubert dynasty and will soon have to deal with this fact.

When his father confronts him and orders him that it’s time to have children if he wants to continue their bloodline, Schubert will find himself in a situation he has never expected. He will dutifully begin with his search, getting himself into numerous funny situations. 

Christmas Crossfire (2020)

This comedy crime thriller revolves around Samuel, a teacher who has just spent the night with the woman of his dreams. The next day, while driving with her to her father’s birthday, he prevents an attempted murder, fleeing from the killers with their target.

While trying to run and hide from those dangerous criminals, he completely forgot about the girl who is now left alone in the woods and will embark on an adventure of her own, after running into an old friend of hers.

Anatomy (2000)

Franka Potente and Benno Fürmann star in this interesting horror thriller set in an exclusive medical school in Heidelberg. Potente is Paula Henning, a medical student who is about to be dragged into a series of mysterious events when the body of a young man she met on the train appears on her dissection table.

She will begin investigating the unusual and intriguing circumstances connected with his death and uncover an Antihippocratic secret society that has long existed within the school.
