Dracule Mihawk is one of the most respected characters in One Piece. He is currently considered to be the best swordsman in the series, and the one to possibly surpass him in the future is Roronoa Zoro, who is aiming to become the best as well. But, despite his reputation, Mihawk was not seen fighting that often, and the character has been in the shadows for most of the time. And while Oda is probably just preparing us for a big showdown between Zoro and him, some fans have speculated that Mihawk might be a fraud, and we will address that here.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Dracule Mihawk is a powerful character from One Piece who is known as the world’s best swordsman, and he was also one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea at one point before the organization was disbanded.
  • Mihawk hasn’t fought much, but the series has confirmed some of his amazing feats, the fact that he beat Zoro with a small knife and that Shanks was his former rival. Also, the World Government wouldn’t have made him a Warlord had he been weak.
  • Still, because he has not been seen in action too much, many fans think that Mihawk could be the series’ biggest fraud, which is untrue.

Despite not fighting much in the series, Mihawk is not a fraud

We never really thought it would come to this, but many fans on the internet are doubting Dracule Mihawk and his reputation in the series. Dracule Mihawk is known as the best swordsman in the series, and that is a reputation that has been following him since the beginning of the series.

But some fans doubt that and think that Mihawk is actually the biggest fraud in the series. This theory, as far as we managed to research it, stems from a Reddit theory that is two years old and has been presented by user oiracam, which states the following:

Mihawk is put on this pedestal because he’s “the strongest swordsman” and “fought shanks back in the day” but let’s call a spade a spade; Mihawk is washed and if you can’t see that you’re coping. His only feats are trolling the east blue (weakest sea) for fodder and getting his attacks tanked and deflected by Jozu. He literally tried to throw an attack at WB, it got tanked by WB’s 3rd strongest commander, and then he spent the rest of the war fighting Vista to a goddamn draw. And he won’t fight shanks cause his arms gone? Please. This dude is running scared cause shanks is a Yonko and actually strong. Zoro left this clown in the dust a while ago

And while this might seem like an angry Zoro fanboy, he was not the only one:

I’m curious to why people are calling him a fraud, and if the answer contains spoilers I don’t mind being spoiled cuz I’m stil gonna watch ut

What reason does this shit went all the way to east blue to hunt don crieg ? He said he was bored, so he picked a boat ( if he was truly bored he would look for anything faster lol ) and went hunt a man weaker than usopp from ennies lobby. Wtf is that bro. SERIOUSLY

If a top tier is in boredom, he will look to fight a commander, mihawk could go hunt jack, king, katakuri even old white beard too see ” how far they are in strengh ). But blud does everything to avoid facing ANYONE slightest strong. And I am ANYONE, indeed.

I like mihawk, at least I used to like him. Seeing now his clone coounterpart doing the same thing. I hate this fraud now. What a pice of shit

We all know Mihawk isn’t “weak,” he’s the WSS for a reason, and yet what does that title even mean when he hasn’t had a real fight in decades? He’s not a fraud bc he lacks strength, he’s a fraud bc despite his strength he’s accomplished nothing. His inaction is what’s making him a fraud.

We’ve finally gotten an attack feat from Shanks, but we’ve also actually seen him block Akainu, clash with WB, heard about him keeping Kaido from MF, somehow walking into Mariejois, plus different dialogue and story relevant moments; there’s actual shit around Shanks that makes him interesting and not a fraud, although he’s definitely a rat.

Mihawk quite literally has nothing to contribute to the story and has contributed nothing in 20 years within the story. Kaido took over a nation and beat its strongest people. Whitebeard changed the moral code of the pirates under his wing by banning slavery and drug trade in his territory then revitalized the pirate era. What the fuck has Mihawk done in 20 years as the WSS.

Mihawk is a fraud bc he won’t do anything until the end of the series when he gets jobbed. He’ll probably get 1 or two real attack feats, but all of it is just to build up Zoro jobbing tf out of him. At least with any other character that’s narrative purpose outside of the fight.

Mihawk can’t even provide lore on anything in the series except maybe black blades, and once again that’s only relevant to Zoro’s “plot line.”

And so on… numerous threads are questioning whether Mihawk is a fraud or claiming that he is, and listing them wouldn’t make much sense since there are too many of them now. All of them – or at least a vast majority – claim that he is a fraud because (1) he keeps avoiding fights with stronger characters and (2) he’s never had a proper fight in the series in the first place. And while both facts are true, this does not make Mihawk a fraud.

Namely, Mihawk was set up as the best swordsman in the world, but critics claim that he has done nothing to confirm that. Okay, we haven’t seen him use his skills too often, that is true, but remember these facts:

  1. He was able to slice the sea and a whole ship with his sword;
  2. He defeated Zoro with a small knife, while the latter had three swords (two of which Mihawk shattered);
  3. Shanks was once his rival until he lost his arm (and Shanks is a proven master-level swordsman);
  4. He taught Zoro how to imbue his blades with Armament Haki during the time skip;
  5. No one wants to face him in a fight;
  6. The World Government considered him so powerful that it made him a Warlord of the Sea, a title given to those who were dangerous but useful to them.

All these facts combined tell a wholly different story and show that Mihawk’s reputation is completely justified. The arguments that he is a fraud make absolutely no sense, and save for listing a bunch of other comments and theories, there is not much that we can add here.

No one in the series has ever doubted Mihawk, and it is obvious that Oda is setting up a big duel between him and Zoro to determine the best in the world. So, no, Mihawk is not a fraud, and all the theories we’ve listed here for you make absolutely no sense and come from people who either did not understand Oda’s narrative evolution or do not have enough information about Mihawk’s story.
