Dogs are among the best things in life, and there are a plethora of movies having them as main characters, although, in my humble opinion, there should be more. The “Air Bud” movie series is a collection of family-oriented films that center around a talented and athletic dog named Buddy. The first film in the series, “Air Bud,” was released in 1997, and it was an instant hit that spawned one of the largest dog-oriented franchises in the world. Currently, the ‘Air Bud’ franchise consists out of 14 movies, and today, we’re going to tell you how to watch them in order. 

All 14 ‘Air Bud’ movies in release date order 

The main ‘Air Bud’ series started back in 1997, and the family loved it; the critics not so much, but then again, it’s rare to find a family dog-oriented movie that critics praise for its artistic qualities. That first series of movies gave rise to two spinoff franchises, ‘Air Buddies’ and ‘Santa Paws,’ all focused on dogs in different holiday settings. Are all ‘Air Bud’ movies connected? What’s the best way to watch them?

All movies in the ‘Air Bud’ franchise are connected and share similar themes. Even the spinoffs are connected through Buddy’s son, who continues the legacy of being extraordinarily talented at every sport imaginable. It’s best to watch the movies in release date order; however, due to the nature of the franchise, each movie can also be watched as a standalone film. There’s also an in-universe chronology that you can pay attention to if you’re really invested in the story. While there is continuity within the series, each film often introduces new human characters and explores different sports or themes, maintaining a family-friendly and light-hearted tone throughout.

As we’ve mentioned, there is a chronology in the ‘Air Bud’ universe that should be respected since some movies serve as prequels and not all center on Buddy’s character. Here’s how the ‘Air Bud’ timeline goes:

The franchise started with ‘Air Bud,’ and the main character is a golden retriever named Buddy. Buddy was originally a stray dog who came across Josh Framm, a troubled child traumatized by the premature death of his father. Josh was practicing basketball on a makeshift court when he came across Buddy and discovered his amazing sports talent. And this is pretty much the premise of the original ‘Air Bud’ franchise for the first three installments. We follow Josh, who is growing up, and Buddy. 

In the fourth movie in the franchise, ‘Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch, ‘ Josh moves to college, and his sister Andrea starts caring for Buddy. Of course, Buddy helps her out with her budding baseball career. 

In ‘Air Buddies,’ the sixth movie in the franchise, Buddy gets a litter of puppies, and this is where the franchise fundamentally changed; the movies started going in a different direction, incorporating animal speech and even some supernatural elements into the narrative. The seventh movie, ‘Snow Buddies,’ was the last installment to feature Buddy; after that, the franchise was resting solely on his offspring. 

‘Air Buddies’ is not the only spinoff to the original movie series as ‘The Search for Santa Paws’ and ‘Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups’ are prequels to ‘Santa Buddies’ and as such should be watched before that movie despite being released after it. 

‘Santa Buddies, ‘ ‘Santa Paws,’ and ‘Santa Paws’ can be watched as a standalone series of holiday movies. The last installment in the franchise so far is ‘Super Buddies’ and it focuses on the group of Buddies as they get superpowers and go up against Commander Drex, an evil, power-hungry space warlord. As you can see, the franchise went from an unbelievable but somewhat grounded story to dogs with superpowers.

Where to watch all the above-mentioned movies? 

Every single movie in the ‘Air Bud’ franchise can be watched on Disney+, with the exception of the first movie in the spinoff series ‘Air Buddies’, which was released in 2006. For some reason, that movie can only be rented on Apple TV store, Google Play, and various other digital marketplaces. 

Will there be more ‘Air Bud’ movies?

Fans were begging Disney to make the ‘Air Bud’ franchise the latest 90’s reboot, and although nothing about the reboot is known, we do know that a 3D animated series called ‘Air Buddy: Dream Team’ was developed and is currently slated for a 2024 release. As far as the next installment in the franchise is known, Robert Vince, the man behind the franchise, explained that making more ‘Air Buddy’ movies is his biggest mission and that he has been writing the next installment for more than five years and is currently waiting for the right timing to start working it, so yes, there will be more ‘Air Bud’ movies.
