Blue Exorcist: What Is a Morinath Contract & Why Did Yukio Have to Sign It?
After many years, the third season of Blue Exorcist is finally back, and in this article, we have decided to start covering the series. We have already talked about the Illuminati and its members, who are a pivotal aspect of the third season, but in this article, we are going to talk about another concept from that season that is not directly related to the Illuminati. The topic of this article is going to be a Morinath Contract, as we are going to explain to you what it actually is, why Yukio signed one, and why it is so important in the first place.
The Morinath Contract is a type of binding contract that can be quite dangerous for the signer
The world of Blue Exorcist is filled with various interesting concepts. The lore is rich with such things, as the series’ focus is on the supernatural, so the world created by the author has a lot of things that can be discussed. Some are, of course, better known than others. This article will be dedicated to a relatively unknown concept from the series, as we have decided to tell you everything you need to know about the Morinath Contract in Blue Exorcist.
In the world of Blue Exorcist, a Morinath Contract is a type of binding contract that a person makes with a specific Demon. The topic of the contract can be anything, really, but it is important to note that a Morinath Contract cannot be broken, which is why it is usually signed to secure someone’s cooperation in certain cases. A Morinath Contract is a guarantee that the signer will actually do what he said or what is needed of him in a certain situation, which is why it acts as a sort of failsafe mechanism in many different situations.
In order to sign a contract, one has to put one’s own bloody fingertip on the center of the contract, which is then considered to be signed. So, what is the gist of it, and how does it actually work?
Well, as we’ve said, a Morinath Contract assures compliance. When signed, the signer is obliged to fulfill their end of the deal or will be faced with dire consequences. Namely, if the signer fails to fulfill their end of the deal, the Morinath Contract will be triggered, and it will all start with a symbol appearing on the signer’s body (see the article’s top photo for an illustration of the symbol). When this is is triggered, the Demon related to the contract will appear and will hunt down the signer in order to kill them.
Breaking a Morinath Contract doesn’t necessarily mean death, as the other party of the contract has control of the Demon. This means that they can choose the moment and the manner of the attack, which makes the situation for the signer who breached the contract quite specific; namely, despite the fact that they know they can expect an attack, they do not know when it will come and how it will manifest itself. It is unclear whether the signer can fight off the attack, but it is possible that they could if they are strong enough to defeat the Demon in question.
So, why are we even talking about this concept? Well, if you remember what happened in the series, Yukio was summoned to a confidential meeting by Mephisto. Arriving in front of the Order, he was told that the topic of the meeting was strictly confidential and to assure his compliance, Lightning made him sign a Morinath Contract, which Yukio agreed to. The meeting was about Saburota Todo and his association with the Illuminati, and while it was later determined that a Morinath Contract was necessary in Yukio’s case, Arthur A. Angel explained that it was all Lightning’s idea and not his, as Yukio was definitely someone who could be trusted.
