Released in 2013, “Escape Plan” is an American prison action thriller featuring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead roles. The film also stars Jim Caviezel, 50 Cent, Vinnie Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Amy Ryan. Directed by Swedish filmmaker Mikael Håfström, the screenplay was crafted by Miles Chapman and Jason Keller, who used the anagram pen-name ‘Arnell Jesko.’ This movie marked the first collaboration between Stallone and Schwarzenegger as co-leads. ‘Escape Plan’ is a truly interesting franchise, and despite limited marketing it amassed quite a lot of fans. Due to that, we’re going to tell you how to watch the entire franchise in order.

All 3 ‘Escape Plan’ movies in release date order

Currently, the ‘Escape Plan’ franchise consists of three movies released in the span of 6 years, but only the first movie saw moderate success. But even still, the reviews were mostly mixed, with critics noting that the film is too cheesy to give justice to two of the biggest action stars in the history of the genre.

  1. ‘Escape Plan’ (2013)
  2. ‘Escape Plan 2: Hades’ (2018)
  3. ‘Escape Plan: The Extractors’ (2019)

Are all ‘Escape Plan’ movies connected? What’s the best way to watch them?

All ‘Escape Plan’ movies are connected and set within the same continuity and timeline. The common character in all of them is Ray Breslin, played by Sylvester Stallone. Since the franchise doesn’t have a complicated timeline, the best approach is to simply watch all the movies in release date order.

‘Escape Plan’ movies in chronological order

As I’ve mentioned before, the chronology of the franchise is really not that complicated, and each installment continues the loose story of the previous movie.

1. ‘Escape Plan’ (2013)

Former prosecutor Ray Breslin, co-owner of the security firm Breslin-Clark, specializes in testing supermax prison security. Motivated by the murder of his family by an escaped convict he prosecuted, Breslin poses as an inmate to escape and expose prison weaknesses. Partnered with Lester Clark, Breslin accepts a CIA deal to test a secret prison without knowing its location. Captured under the guise of a terrorist, he loses communication when his tracking chip is removed. Inside the prison, Breslin discovers discrepancies, forms an alliance with Emil Rottmayer, and learns of a mysterious benefactor, Victor Mannheim.

2. ‘Escape Plan 2: Hades’ (2018)

Ray Breslin’s security company, with members Hush, Abigail, Shu Ren, Jasper Kimbral, and Luke Graves, faces a setback when Kimbral’s algorithm-driven decision leads to a hostage’s death, resulting in his dismissal. A year later, Shu is enlisted to protect his cousin Yusheng Ma, a target of rival company Ruscho. After a party in Bangkok, Shu and Yusheng are kidnapped and find themselves in HADES, an arena where inmates fight. Shu encounters Kimbral, revealing they are both imprisoned. The rest of Breslin’s team attempts to locate Shu and Yusheng.

3. ‘Escape Plan: The Extractors’ (2019)

During a tour of factory locations in Mansfield, Ohio, Daya Zhang and her entourage, associated with Zhang Innovations, are kidnapped by mercenaries. Ray Breslin, a security expert, is contacted through a USB flash drive left with Zhang’s unconscious bodyguard, Bao Yung. The flash drive contains a message from Lester Clark, Jr., the kidnapper and son of Breslin’s former partner. Seeking revenge for his father’s betrayal, Lester demands a $700 million ransom. Breslin, along with associates Shen Lo, Abigail, Hush, and Jules, sets out to rescue Daya and Abigail from a prison compound in Latvia known as “Devil’s Station.”

Where to watch the above-mentioned movies?

‘Escape Plan’ (2013) can be streamed on Peacock and rented or purchased on the Apple TV store, Vudu, Microsoft Store, and via DirecTV. ‘Escape Plan 2: Hades’ (2018) can be streamed on Netflix but is also available for rent or purchase on the above-mentioned platforms. The last installment in the series ‘Escape Plan: The Extractors’ (2019), can be streamed both on Netflix and Fubo.

Will there be more ‘Escape Plan’ movies?

The third ‘Escape Plan’ movie was marketed as the final installment, and for the time being, it looks like it will stay that way. ‘The Extractors’ was released straight to DVD and was mostly negatively received; it also just barely managed to be profitable. It looks like there isn’t enough interest generated for the franchise that had 2 out of 3 movies considered bad. However, if something does come up, we will certainly update you.
