‘Damsel’ is an upcoming American dark fantasy film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazeau for Netflix, based on Evelyn Skye’s novel of the same name. The cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Angela Bassett, and Robin Wright. The film, set to be released by Netflix on March 8, 2024, follows the story of a young noblewoman who agrees to marry a prince, only to find herself in danger when his family plans to sacrifice her to settle an ancient debt. Trapped in a cave with a dangerous dragon, she must rely on her intelligence and determination to survive. ‘Damsel’ is an unusual approach to the fairy tale fantasy genre, and due to that, we decided to explain the movie’s age rating to you.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • ‘Damsel’ is rated PG-13 meaning that the show can be watched without parental guidance by children as young as 13.
  • The movie features some violence, some scenes with blood, weaponry, and action in it but it’s nothing over the top. The movie also has relatively dark themes like vendetta, sacrifice, and survival, but it’s really nothing too dark.
  • Children younger than 13 can definitely watch the movie but only with parental guidance so you can explain some of the scarier aspects of the movie to them.

‘Damsel’ will be appealing to younger audiences, but it’s not suitable for all children

In many ways ‘Damsel’ starts off like your classic Disney fairytale we follow Elodie who thinks that she has found her perfect prince but soon after marrying she realizes (although too late) that she is being used as a pawn in an ancient debt and she is sacrificed. Thrown in a pit, stuck with a nasty ancient dragon and she needs to rely on herself and her wits and skills to survive.

This is a dark fairytale in every aspect and although those can be horror-oriented and extremely scary, this is not the case with ‘Damsel.’ ‘Damsel’ does have some difficult themes like survival, vengeance, blood feuds, curses, sacrifice, etc, but those are present in most fantasy works since the genre exists and there really isn’t anything overly grotesque and horrific when it comes to Damsel’s approach to them.

9 Great Fantasy Movies You Probably Didn’t Watch

Violence, blood & gore are present but not the point of the movie

You can expect some milder violence in the movie, after all our heroine will have to survive not only the dragon but also her enemies who want to sacrifice her. There are a couple of scenes that have weaponry featured, monsters, destruction, and the usual stuff for the genre but it’s nothing over the top. There are also scenes featuring injury and blood, but once again it’s nothing too horrific and it’s absolutely suitable for younger audiences.

There is some romance in the movie but nothing explicit

You don’t have to fear that your child will be exposed to sexual themes since the movie really isn’t about that. Yes, there are some references to romance and even a wedding taking place, but that’s not the focus and not the main point of the movie. You don’t have to worry about sexual scenes or anything like that.

So, can you kids watch ‘Damsel’?

Children as young as 13 years old are absolutely fine watching this movie by themselves, I would even go as far as to say that kids as young as 11 can watch the movie alone just fine. However anything younger than that and you should probably be present to explain some darker aspects of the movie to your kid. It’s completely up to you and what you think your kid can handle.
