Scarlett Johansson Breaks Silence on Her Lawsuit Against Disney: “I was incredibly disappointed”
Scarlett Johansson last appeared in the MCU in 2021’s ‘Black Widow,’ directed by Cate Shortland. The film stars Johansson in the lead role, alongside Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz. ‘Black Widow’ follows Natasha as she confronts her past and teams up with her estranged “family” to dismantle the villainous organization known as the Red Room.
The movie was acclaimed for its action sequences, character development, and performances, particularly those of Johansson and Pugh. However, it also sparked a contentious legal battle between the actress and the studio. In July 2021, Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company, citing breach of contract concerning the movie’s release.
Johansson asserted that Disney’s choice to release the film simultaneously in theaters and on the Disney+ streaming platform, through its Premier Access program, breached her contract, which linked her compensation directly to theatrical box office performance.
Recently, the star of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ spoke to the New York Times about the situation. The actress shared that while she harbors no ill will towards the company, the entire ordeal left her profoundly disappointed and she found the handling of it unprofessional.
I don’t hold a grudge. I think it was just poor judgment and poor leadership at that time. It just felt very unprofessional to me, the entire ordeal. And honestly, I was incredibly disappointed, especially because I was holding out hope until, finally, my team was like, ‘You have to act.
The situation escalated when Disney publicly responded to Scarlett, attempting to leverage the COVID-19 pandemic to garner public sympathy. They portrayed Scarlett in a negative light, accusing her of displaying “callous disregard for the devastating and prolonged global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The lawsuit was eventually settled in Johansson’s favor, and according to recent rumors, she may be collaborating with Disney once again, particularly within the MCU.
Recent reports suggest that Scarlett Johansson is currently engaged in a confidential project at Disney+. Clues emerged when Courtney Baker, a creative executive at Marvel Studios, updated her LinkedIn profile with hints of new developments or roles within the company.
Rumors speculate that Johansson is involved in developing a new project centered around an older character known as ‘The Blonde Phantom,’ who shares similarities with ‘Black Widow.’
