Netflix’s New Thriller Shows Suranne Jones as UK Prime Minister in a High-Stakes Fight
A new political thriller is coming to Netflix soon, and the first trailer has already caught people’s attention. The series is called Hostage, and it stars Suranne Jones, known from Doctor Foster and Gentleman Jack, as Britain’s new Prime Minister.
The show is set to land on Netflix on August 21, 2025.
The story follows Abigail Dalton, the Prime Minister, who finds herself in a terrifying situation when her husband, played by Ashley Thomas, is kidnapped. In the trailer, viewers see Abigail standing strong as she faces the criminals behind the attack.
In one intense scene, she says, “These people will stop at nothing, but I can not give in to them.” The trailer also shows a huge explosion at Downing Street, showing just how dangerous the situation gets. Abigail is pushed to make impossible choices as she says, “I will not negotiate. My loyalties are to this country. I will not allow it to be held to ransom.”
The show doesn’t just focus on the UK. Julie Delpy, who starred in the Before movies, plays the French president, Vivienne Toussaint. Her character faces her own problems when she gets blackmailed during a visit to Britain.
According to Netflix’s official description, the story is about both leaders dealing with personal and political threats as their families and careers hang in the balance. The two must decide whether to work together or risk everything.
The creator of Hostage is Matt Charman, who also worked on the movie Bridge of Spies. He wrote the series, which is produced by Netflix and Binocular Productions. Hostage was filmed in the UK and on the Canary Islands. The show was previously called The Choice before Netflix confirmed its final title in early 2025.
Speaking about her role, Suranne Jones shared that joining Netflix was something she wanted for a long time. “I’m thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I’m really proud of,” she said when the show was first revealed. “It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. We’d talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. Hostage was perfect – me and Matt together backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.”
The series will be a five-part miniseries, and Netflix has planned to release it all at once on August 21, 2025. Fans of tense dramas and political thrillers won’t have to wait too long to dive into this gripping new story.
