‘Maul: Shadow Lord’ Season 2 Is Already Underway and Sam Witwer Says the Wait Won’t Be Long
Just as ‘Maul: Shadow Lord’ wraps up its critically acclaimed first season, star and consulting producer Sam Witwer is already teasing what comes next, and the news is about as good as Star Wars fans could hope for.
Speaking with The Direct, Witwer confirmed he already knows when ‘Maul: Shadow Lord’ Season 2 will arrive, though he admitted he is “forbidden” from sharing the specifics just yet. What he could say was enough to ease any lingering anxiety about a lengthy hiatus. He told the outlet that “it’s not a situation where the audiences will have to wait too, too long,” adding that the team has “been working on it for a while.”
The renewal for a second season was made public in April, and Witwer’s statement that the team has been working on it “for a while” confirms there was always a plan for multiple Maul-centric seasons. That kind of long-range thinking from Lucasfilm Animation suggests ‘Shadow Lord’ is being treated as a sustained franchise pillar rather than a limited event.
The series has proven itself more than worthy of that investment. It currently holds a near-perfect 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and over 4 million viewers tuned in during its premiere week on Disney Plus, making it one of the highest-rated Star Wars shows in the platform’s history. The success clearly caught even Witwer himself off guard. He revealed in a separate interview that his original prediction was simply that the show would “deliver a season that the fans will accept,” admitting he “did not necessarily see all of the passion and how hardcore everyone is locked into this show.”
The pressure of that reception has only sharpened the team’s ambition heading into the next chapter. Witwer told The Direct that “the entire team, myself included, feels a tremendous responsibility to slam our foot into the gas and keep it moving,” saying the goal is to “keep discovering new things” and to “tell good stories.”
With no new live-action Star Wars TV series officially confirmed beyond ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2, and Lucasfilm shifting its attention back toward theatrical releases, ‘Shadow Lord’ is positioned to become the face of Star Wars television for the foreseeable future. The ten-episode first season was created by Dave Filoni, who now serves as Lucasfilm President, with the animation crafted to be more stylized and edgier than previous entries in the franchise, reflecting both Maul’s character and the gritty setting of the planet Janix.
The Season 1 finale dropped on Disney Plus on May 4, as part of this year’s Star Wars Day celebrations, giving the show a fittingly galactic send-off before attention turns to what comes next. If ‘Shadow Lord’ follows a release pattern similar to previous Lucasfilm Animation series, a 2027 return is a reasonable expectation, though nothing official has been confirmed.
Given how strongly the first season landed, the real question now is just how much further Maul’s story can go before it reaches the fate fans already know is coming, so share your thoughts below on where you think ‘Shadow Lord’ Season 2 should take the former Sith next.
