The new red band trailer for Mortal Kombat II has smashed records, racking up an incredible 106.8 million views worldwide in just its first 24 hours.

According to WaveMetrix data, the trailer dropped on Thursday, July 17 at 9 AM PST and quickly became the most-watched red-band trailer ever. It launched in 68 countries and was available in 47 different languages. Fans are eagerly waiting for the movie’s release on October 24.

The original Mortal Kombat movie from 2021, also directed by Simon McQuoid, set a high bar by breaking records for red-band trailers with 116 million views in its first week. It even outperformed trailers for popular movies like Logan and Deadpool 2 in early viewership. That movie did well at the box office, too, earning $23.3 million in its opening weekend, despite being released simultaneously on HBO Max.

The new sequel won’t have the same streaming release, so fans will see how it performs with a pure theatrical launch.

The buzz around the new trailer has been strong, with fans, celebrities, and influencers praising Karl Urban’s casting as Johnny Cage and celebrating the return of classic characters and lines. One fan favorite moment already is Scorpion’s shout of “get over here!” which many are calling a highlight for longtime fans.

Warner Bros. and New Line also released a fun, fake trailer called Uncaged Fury starring Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, which got 22.2 million views in just one day. That was all from organic traffic, showing just how excited fans are about this sequel.

Mortal Kombat II continues the story from the first movie, focusing on the champion fighters from the video games who face off against each other and the dark villain Shao Kahn, who threatens Earthrealm.

Lewis Tan returns as Cole Young, the MMA fighter at the center of the battle. Other returning stars include Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. New faces joining the cast are Karl Urban, Tati Gabrielle, and Adeline Rudolph.

The screenplay was written by Jeremy Slater, with production led by Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid himself. Executive producers include Michael Clear and Judson Scott. So far, the three Mortal Kombat movies have earned a combined $257.8 million worldwide.

The news was first reported by Deadline.
