Fans of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul got a surprise when the official account for Vince Gilligan’s shows came alive again on social media. For the first time in almost a year, it posted something new, a strange teaser image for Gilligan’s upcoming series Wycaro. The image shows a cotton swab forming a smiley face, along with the phrase “happiness is contagious.” That’s it. No context. Just a mysterious smile.

Many fans thought it might be a clue about a new Breaking Bad spinoff. But that’s not the case. Apple TV+ confirmed the teaser is for Wycaro, a new sci-fi drama created by Gilligan and starring Rhea Seehorn, who played Kim Wexler on Better Call Saul. According to a live YouTube countdown, something bigger is set to drop on Friday, July 25.

Even though this new series takes place in Albuquerque like Gilligan’s previous shows, don’t expect anything familiar. Gilligan has made it clear that Wycaro is nothing like his past crime dramas. “There’s no crime, and no methamphetamine,” he told reporters. “The world changes very abruptly in the first episode, and then it is quite different.”

Apple TV+ gave the show a straight-to-series order for two seasons. Sony Pictures Television is producing it, just like they did for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Interestingly, Apple executives Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, who now lead programming at Apple but used to run Sony Pictures TV, were the ones who originally greenlit Gilligan’s earlier work.

Gilligan has been talking about this new series since 2022. Back then, he said it would be “very different than Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul,” and more in line with his older work on The X-Files. He was a writer, director, and producer on that show before co-creating The Lone Gunmen.

According to Deadline, Wycaro is a grounded sci-fi series that puts a twist on reality. It focuses on people, with some humor and emotional storytelling mixed in. Gilligan said it isn’t a typical morality tale, but it does hold “a mirror to humanity.”

So far, we still don’t know much about the plot. But from the teaser and Gilligan’s past work, it’s safe to say this won’t be your average sci-fi series. Keep an eye on July 25 — we might finally get more answers then.
