Robert Pattinson Is Done Being Polite About His Batman Body, and He Has a Point
Few superhero casting choices have generated as much noise as Robert Pattinson stepping into the Batsuit for Matt Reeves’ 2022 reimagining of the Dark Knight. Before a single frame of the film had been released to the public, a pre-existing interview comment had already turned the actor into a punchline, with online critics convinced he had simply refused to train for one of cinema’s most physically demanding roles.
The original source of the controversy traced back to a 2020 GQ lockdown-era interview where Pattinson jokingly stated he was barely doing anything to prepare physically, suggesting that working out constantly made you “part of the problem” when it came to male body standards. The comment was clearly meant to be self-deprecating and a little wry, but it stuck. Pattinson later compared it to another offhand remark that had haunted him for years, saying it was “the same thing as saying in an interview when I was like 21 that I didn’t wash my hair. It just sticks for 15 years.”
Now, with the sequel deep in pre-production, the actor has finally had enough of the narrative. Speaking to GQ magazine as part of the publication’s summer cover story on ‘The Odyssey,’ Pattinson revealed he had a home gym installed specifically to build muscle ahead of filming ‘The Batman: Part II.’ The frustration in his words was unmistakable as he pushed back on the years of mockery, making clear the “lazy Batman” reputation was built entirely on a joke that never landed.
As reported by Variety, Pattinson said, “[Everyone was like], ‘You didn’t work out at all.’ I worked out every f—ing day. Even after that, I still look like I didn’t work out. I worked out twice a day at, like, three o’clock in the morning. I’m like, It’s just because I said it in an interview [once that exercise was uncool]. I was trying to sound cool!”
The GQ conversation also pulled back the curtain on the chaotic reality of gearing up for the sequel’s production. Pattinson casually admitted he had not even received a full schedule yet, despite already hearing from a stunt coordinator that the shoot could involve eleven weeks of night filming, to which his response was a blunt “Excuse me?” It is the kind of detail that underscores just how demanding a Gotham-set production is behind the scenes, where Batman’s nocturnal world demands the same unsociable hours from its cast and crew.
‘The Batman: Part II’ is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated sequels on the horizon, with director Matt Reeves having confirmed a wave of major new additions including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Sebastian Koch, and Charles Dance. Stan is widely expected to portray Gotham district attorney Harvey Dent, though Reeves has not publicly confirmed the specific role. The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on October 1, 2027.
The original ‘The Batman’ opened in March 2022 and grossed $772 million at the worldwide box office, more than justifying Reeves’ darker, detective-driven take on the character. With that kind of commercial and critical foundation beneath him, Pattinson is returning to Gotham with considerably more leverage than he had the first time around, and it sounds like he has earned every right to shut down the body-shaming conversation once and for all.
Whether you think the original physique discourse was fair criticism or just internet pile-on culture doing what it does best, let us know where you stand in the comments.
