New Updates & Details Revealed for the Live-Action ‘God of War’ Series
Amazon’s live-action God of War series finally has some new updates, and fans have reason to get excited. Though the show is still in early development, showrunner Ronald D. Moore shared a promising look into what’s happening behind the scenes.
During an interview with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Moore revealed that writing is still underway. He said the writers’ room is fully active and the team is working hard to shape the story.
The first season is planned to have ten episodes, but don’t expect filming to begin anytime soon. If things go well, cameras might start rolling in 2026.
Moore admitted that this is his first time adapting a video game. He said the experience has been surprising in the best way.
“We’re in the scripts phase. We’re still working on scripts. It’s going very well. We’ve got a good team. It’s been a fascinating thing to sink my teeth into. I’ve never done an adaptation of a video game, and the deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and the depth of the mythology that’s involved in this video game.”
He also praised God of War game director Cory Barlog, who’s helping out with the series and playing a major creative role. According to Moore, Barlog’s knowledge of the game’s world is incredibly detailed.
“Cory Barlog is a genius. That’s not a word I throw around very much, but I’ve had several meetings with Cory, and you ask Cory, ‘Well, tell me about the backstory of this or how this works,’ and he just can talk because he holds it all in his head… It is like a gigantic novel, even bigger than the Outlander novels, which is a lot to digest.”
The show will focus on the Norse-era of God of War, which started with the 2018 reboot of the series. That means Kratos and his son Atreus will be the main characters. Moore said it won’t be a copy-and-paste version of the game, but it won’t stray far either.
“It’s an adaptation, so it’s an adaptation-slash-interpretation as you go into live-action… We want to keep the story. We want to keep the characters and the spirit of it.” He said.
This series has been a long time coming. Back in March 2022, Deadline reported that Amazon was in talks to make a live-action God of War show. Sony confirmed the news a few months later, and the project officially got the green light in December 2022. Originally, it was being written by The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, along with The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins. But in late 2024, that creative team stepped away, and the studios decided to start fresh.
That’s when Ronald D. Moore came in as the new showrunner and writer. He’s joined by several producers, including Cory Barlog, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and others from PlayStation Productions, Santa Monica Studio, and Amazon Studios. The show will stream worldwide on Prime Video in more than 240 countries.
So while there’s still a long wait ahead, it’s clear the team is taking its time to do things right. With the brains behind both the show and the game involved, fans can hope for something special when God of War finally hits screens.
