‘Godzilla Minus One’ Sequel Seemingly Confirms Two Notable Cast Members Will Return
It looks like Toho is moving forward with the next chapter in its hit Godzilla Minus One story, and fans may have just gotten their first real clue.
A recruitment page for extras on a Toho website accidentally gave something away. Hidden in the site’s source code were the Japanese names of Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe from the first film, which many believe points to their return in the upcoming sequel.
The studio hasn’t officially confirmed anything, but fans were quick to notice and share the find.

Back in early 2024, director Takashi Yamazaki said there hadn’t been any plans for a sequel yet. But even then, he shared that he was interested in continuing the story and following the same characters.
He also wanted to bring in another kaiju for Godzilla to fight next time. In an interview with Mono Magazine, Yamazaki said the sequel would deal with the “curse” Godzilla left behind in Japan, comparing it to the Tatari-gami from Princess Mononoke.
Actress Minami Hamabe joked in the same interview that “if there is a next series, I might be the one stepping on and crushing people.” Another cast member, Sakura Ando, told the Daily Express that she wants to meet Godzilla in the sequel, maybe even “jumping like this Spider-Man-type woman taking down Godzilla.”
At a special event in Tokyo in January 2024, after a screening of the black-and-white version of Minus One, the sequel talk kept going. Yamazaki joined the event virtually and shared that he’d like to take the characters back to the sea. One of the actors suggested that Noriko’s connection to Godzilla could be a key plot point in the next movie, saying she might carry the monster’s “cells.”
But then in February 2024, during a Q&A with Collider, Yamazaki said he was working on a new movie, but made it clear it wasn’t officially a sequel. Things changed by November, when Toho confirmed a new Godzilla project with Yamazaki returning as writer, director, and visual effects lead. At that point, they didn’t say whether it would be a direct follow-up to Minus One.
Still, at the Visual Effects Society Awards in February 2025, Yamazaki revealed he was deep into storyboarding and writing the new film, and that it would cost more than Minus One. Bloomberg later reported in April that a sequel is in development, and in July, Toho International president Koji Ueda hinted that the next Godzilla film could arrive in 2026.
There’s still no official title or plot, but all signs suggest that Toho’s next move with the King of the Monsters is going to be big. With the director back and secrets already slipping out, fans won’t have to wait too long to find out what’s next.
