Mia Carragher Joins ‘The Hunger Games’ as Katniss Everdeen as the Franchise Expands
Mia Carragher is stepping into the spotlight with a big role, she’s been cast as Katniss Everdeen in the new stage version of The Hunger Games.
The play will open in London on October 20 at the Troubadour Theatre in Canary Wharf. It’s the first time The Hunger Games is being turned into a live stage production.
The announcement came through the show’s official Instagram page. They posted a headshot of Carragher with the caption, “Meet our girl on fire.” Shortly after, they shared a video of her in rehearsals, handling a crossbow with focus and skill. The excitement around her casting has been building quickly, especially because this is such an iconic character.
Carragher talked to Variety about landing the role. “I’m really excited to play Katniss. I relate to her quite a lot,” she said. Her background gives her solid experience for the stage, she studied at the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in the UK and later trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in the US. Some may also recognize her last name. She is the daughter of former Liverpool footballer Jamie Carragher.
The play is being directed by Matthew Dunster, who also directed the popular stage thriller 2:22 – A Ghost Story. The script comes from Conor McPherson, a well-known playwright who’s won several awards. McPherson adapted the story from Suzanne Collins’ original Hunger Games book, the first in the bestselling trilogy that sparked a major movie franchise.
Fans of the books and films will recognize Katniss as the brave teenager who becomes the face of a rebellion in a dystopian world. Bringing that character to life on stage is a big job, but Carragher seems ready for the challenge.
This stage version promises to be something new, even for longtime fans. With a mix of strong storytelling, well-known source material, and a rising young actress in the lead, The Hunger Games: On Stage is set to be a major event in London’s theatre scene this autumn.
