Adam Sandler’s Hit Comedy Is Now the Biggest Opening Weekend Ever for a Netflix Movie
Adam Sandler is back in a big way. His new movie, Happy Gilmore 2, has become the biggest Netflix movie opening ever in the U.S.
The comedy sequel hit the streaming service on July 25, and in just three days it pulled in 46.7 million views, according to Netflix’s Top 10 chart. That makes it the number one English-language film for the week of July 21 to 27.
The huge numbers also make it the best opening weekend for any Adam Sandler film on Netflix. He’s made a bunch for the platform over the years, like Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween, and The Week Of.
The success of the new film brought people back to the original too. The 1996 classic Happy Gilmore made it to number three on Netflix’s global Top 10 list with 11.4 million views. That’s the second week in a row it’s landed in the Top 10.
It’s been nearly 30 years since the first movie came out and made $40 million in theaters. That one turned Sandler into a comedy star. In it, he played Happy Gilmore, a guy who fails at hockey but finds success in golf, thanks to his wild behavior. He enters a tournament to help save his grandma’s house from being taken by the bank.
Now, in Happy Gilmore 2, Happy is retired and drinking too much after a terrible accident on the golf course. But when his daughter needs money for an expensive ballet school in Paris, he decides to get back in the game. Christopher McDonald returns as the loud and cocky Shooter McGavin, and the cast also includes Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, and Sandler’s wife Jackie and their daughters Sunny and Sadie.
The movie has a ton of cameos too, including real PGA champs Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, Hot Ones host Sean Evans, and Guy Fieri from the Food Network.
The original Happy Gilmore has a 70% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty high for a Sandler comedy.
Netflix’s Top 10 also showed that the animated film KPop Demon Hunters held the second spot with 26.3 million views in its sixth week. It’s now the most popular animated movie Netflix has ever released.
On the TV side, Untamed stayed at number one for English-language series for the second week. Set in Yosemite National Park, the murder mystery had 26.1 million views, which is more than the 24.6 million from its debut. It stars Eric Bana and has already been picked up for another season.
Meanwhile, Squid Game season 3 continued to dominate non-English language shows, staying at the top for the fifth straight week. It added another 4.6 million views this week.
With 46.7 million views and a number one spot in 47 countries, Happy Gilmore 2 is clearly hitting a hole-in-one with fans all over the world.
