Thunderbolts* May Strike Disney+ Soon, According to Rumors – Longest MCU Wait Yet?
This August Thunderbolts* might finally be coming to Disney+,and later than any Marvel movie before it.
A new commercial airing in Greece has started a wave of rumors, saying the movie will hit the streamer on Wednesday, August 27. If that’s true, it would mark the longest gap between a Marvel movie’s theater release and its Disney+ debut. The wait would be 117 days, which is even longer than Captain America: Brave New World (103 days), Deadpool & Wolverine (110 days), and The Marvels (92 days).
According to a Greek ad, 'THUNDERBOLTS*' is coming to Disney+ on August 27.

There’s no official word from Marvel yet, but fans have already picked up on the Greek ad and shared it online.
Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* was released in theaters on May 2, 2025, after a red carpet premiere in London on April 22. It’s the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the last one in Phase Five. The story brings together a group of antiheroes who get trapped in a dangerous situation and are forced to team up for a mission that could kill them.
The cast is stacked with big names like Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and more. The screenplay was written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, with additional work from Lee Sung Jin. He came on board after previously teaming up with Schreier on the Netflix series Beef.
Marvel had first hinted at a Thunderbolts team way back in 2021. The movie was officially announced in 2022, and filming finally kicked off in early 2024 after delays caused by the Hollywood strikes. They shot scenes in Atlanta, Utah, and Kuala Lumpur before wrapping things up in June.
A lot of people were curious about the asterisk in the movie’s title. That mystery was cleared up during the film’s ending, when the team rebrands as the New Avengers. The title actually changes in the end credits, and some post-release promos even used the new name.
Even though critics liked the movie, it didn’t do as well at the box office. By the end of July, it had made about $190 million in the U.S. and another $192 million internationally, for a total of $382.4 million. That’s not great by Marvel standards. In fact, reports reported that the film needed to make around $425 million just to break even, calling that number “unachievable.”
Still, the response wasn’t all bad. On Rotten Tomatoes, 88% of critics gave it a thumbs up. The site’s critics consensus reads, “Assembling a ragtag band of underdogs with Florence Pugh as their magnetic standout, Thunderbolts* refreshingly goes back to the tried-and-true blueprint of the MCU’s best adventures.”
Metacritic gave it a 68 out of 100, which means reviews were generally positive. CinemaScore gave it an A–, and PostTrak said 74% of viewers would definitely recommend it. The film also got a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars from audiences polled after screenings.
So while Thunderbolts* didn’t break box office records, it still managed to win over a lot of fans. And if the rumored date turns out to be true, people will be able to watch it from home starting August 27. Now we just have to wait for Disney or Marvel to make it official.
