David Justice Opens Up On Why He Questioned Starting a Family with Halle Berry: “Don’t Cook, Don’t Clean, Don’t Really Seem Motherly”
David Justice recently opened up about why his marriage to Halle Berry didn’t last, sharing honest thoughts about what went wrong. On the All the Smoke podcast hosted by Matt Barnes on August 7, the former MLB star talked about the challenges he and Berry faced that eventually led to their split in 1997.
Justice explained that their marriage started off well. They got married in 1993 and were in the “honeymoon state” for the first few months. But about five months after tying the knot, he began to seriously think about their future, especially when it came to having kids. “If we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?” he asked himself.
He admitted that his ideas about marriage were shaped by his upbringing in the Midwest, where he thought a wife should be traditional, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the home. He said, “At that time, as a young guy, she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues.” This difference in expectations was one of the early signs of trouble.
Justice also revealed how quickly things moved in their relationship. He said Berry asked him to marry her after just five months of knowing each other. He agreed because he didn’t want to say no and hurt her feelings. “I don’t know if my heart was really into it, but I didn’t want to make her feel bad and say no,” he said.
As time passed, their busy careers pulled them apart. Halle was often traveling and working on movies in different places, which meant they spent a lot of time apart. Justice believes that if they had known about therapy back then, things might have turned out differently. “We honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy,” he reflected.
Despite the difficulties, Justice said they never had any major fights or serious problems. He thinks his youth and lack of experience with relationships played a big part. He said, “It’s just… because I was young and had only been in one real relationship before her.”
After their divorce, Justice went on to marry Rebecca Villalobos Justice in 2001. Meanwhile, Halle Berry, now 58, has been open about her struggles in relationships, even mentioning that she sometimes feels like she “can’t keep a man.” She is currently dating singer-songwriter Van Hunt.
David Justice’s candid interview gives fans a deeper look at why the marriage between him and Halle Berry didn’t work out. Their story shows how different expectations, busy lives, and lack of communication can put even high-profile couples under pressure.
