Dean Cain, best known for playing Superman in the 1990s TV show Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, is about to take on a new role, as an honorary officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This surprising news came from Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, who said Cain will be officially sworn in next month. However, it’s still unclear what exactly his responsibilities will be in this honorary position.

Cain talked about his upcoming role during an interview on Fox News. He explained that he has already spoken with ICE officials and is ready to start soon. Cain, who is now 59 years old, also shared that he is already a sworn deputy sheriff and a reserve police officer. He said, “I put out a recruitment video yesterday – I’m actually a sworn deputy sheriff and a reserve police officer – I wasn’t part of ICE, but once I put that out there and you put a little blurb on your show, it went crazy.”

In fact, Cain recently posted a video on social media encouraging people to join ICE. This comes at a time when the Department of Homeland Security has lifted age limits for new ICE hires. The agency is looking to hire more people after Congress approved a big funding boost. This move supports ICE’s plans to increase immigration enforcement efforts.

But Cain’s decision to join ICE has not gone unnoticed. Actor John Leguizamo, known for Romeo + Juliet, didn’t hold back when he criticized Cain for volunteering with the agency. Leguizamo said, “What kind of loser volunteers to be an ICE officer? What a moron. Dean Cain, your pronouns are ‘has/been.’” This sharp comment highlights the ongoing debate about ICE and its controversial role.

ICE has been under heavy criticism lately. Since President Trump took office again, ICE has stepped up immigration raids, which led to protests and legal fights in many states. Some say these raids break the law. California Governor Gavin Newsom has even challenged Trump’s authority in court. Earlier this year, Trump sent National Guard troops to Los Angeles to handle protests over immigration enforcement.

Dean Cain’s political views have shifted over time. He told Fox News he used to be a registered Republican but switched to Independent because he felt the Republican Party didn’t fully represent him.

This isn’t the first time Leguizamo has spoken out against Trump’s immigration policies. In 2024, he bluntly said, “Donald, stop beating around the bush. We want nice people, Swiss people, ski instructors, Wes Anderson fans. Just say ‘white people.’” He criticized Trump for not liking Latino immigrants, making any Latino support for Trump unacceptable in his eyes.
