Charlie Sheen, once the highest-paid TV actor ever, is finally opening up about his wild life in Hollywood. Known more for his headline-making antics than his hit shows, Sheen is now ready to tell his story on his own terms.

The new two-part documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, will premiere on September 10, and both the trailer and poster for the film have already been released.

Directed by Andrew Renzi, known for projects like Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?, and Untold: Jake Paul the Problem Child, aka Charlie Sheen explores both the highs and lows of the actor’s life.

The film follows Sheen’s rise to fame, his public struggles, and the personal battles that became tabloid fodder. It shows his life with honesty, humor, and a new perspective now that he has seven years of sobriety behind him.

Renzi explained to Tudum that getting Sheen to agree to the documentary was not easy. “He did not want to make a documentary. [Sheen] was like, ‘Why step into this arena in this way?’ I had seven to eight months of relationship building with him before we even sat down to shoot the film. That was really important to me,” Renzi said.

The director wanted to make sure the documentary was not just a puff piece. He wanted Sheen to tell his story directly, showing both mistakes and moments of growth. “A guy like him has a lot to offer the world with that story. A lot of times we are scared of hearing from people who have done things we might not agree with, when in reality we should be listening to them. Who better to reveal these kinds of things and to talk about these missteps? I find that to be a beautiful arc,” Renzi added.

aka Charlie Sheen takes viewers through Sheen’s life, starting from his unusual childhood in Malibu, where he grew up surrounded by Hollywood fame and coastal suburbia. He talks openly about how he became a megastar and the dramatic downfalls that played out publicly. The documentary also addresses long-standing rumors and reveals parts of his life he has rarely shared before.

The film features interviews with people who know Sheen well, including friends, Hollywood insiders, and even his former drug dealer. Denise Richards, Heidi Fleiss, Jon Cryer, Sean Penn, Ramon Estevez, Brooke Mueller, Chris Tucker, and others all appear to share their perspectives. While Sheen’s father, Martin, and brother, Emilio Estevez, chose not to be on camera, Renzi said they were supportive.

“They wanted to let Charlie have this moment. He talks about relationship with his family in the documentary — they’re all very close … Watching the movie with Charlie’s whole family in the same room was incredible,” Renzi said.

With the trailer and poster already out, fans can get a first look at Sheen’s candid reflections on a life filled with chaos, fame, and hard lessons. The documentary promises an honest and unfiltered look at the man behind the headlines when it premieres on September 10.
