The trailer for Josh Safdie’s upcoming film Marty Supreme has dropped, giving fans a first look at Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a professional young ping pong player and a champion in 1950s America.

According to the synopsis, “A young man with a dream no one respects goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.” The film promises a mix of sports, comedy, and drama, and is set to release in the United States and Canada on December 25, 2025, through A24.

Marty Supreme is directed by Josh Safdie, who co-wrote the script with Ronald Bronstein. Timothée Chalamet not only stars as Marty but also co-produces the film.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher, who plays Marty’s mother, also appear in supporting roles. Other notable appearances include Penn Jillette, Sandra Bernhard, Spenser Granese, and French highwire artist Philippe Petit.

The project was first teased by Chalamet in December 2023 when he mentioned he was working on a ping pong-related film. By July 2024, reports confirmed the project was Marty Supreme, marking Josh Safdie’s first solo directing project since 2008’s The Pleasure of Being Robbed.

Sources close to the production said that while the story draws inspiration from professional table tennis player Marty Reisman, it is “a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic.”

Chalamet shared that director Josh Safdie encouraged him to do some of his own stunts, saying he trained for months for the ping pong scenes under coaches Diego Schaaf and Wei Wang.

For one visual effect, Safdie had Chalamet wear prescription glasses with contacts underneath to make his eyes appear smaller, temporarily affecting his vision. Khondji added that the movie includes around 140 non-actors, adding authenticity to the period setting.

Marty Supreme is set to release in the United States on December 25, 2025. Nordisk Film will handle distribution in Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. The trailer already gives a taste of Chalamet’s charm and determination as he swings for ping pong glory.
