Disney Approves New Supernatural Dramedy Series Focused on Teenage Witches
Disney Branded Television is bringing a new magical series to life with “Coven Academy,” a supernatural dramedy about three teenage witches learning to master their powers. The show comes from Tim Federle, the creator of the Emmy-winning “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” which starred a young Olivia Rodrigo. According to Disney, the series was first ordered to pilot in March and is now set to premiere on Disney+ and Disney Channel sometime in 2026.
Set in New Orleans, “Coven Academy” mixes magic, mystery, and teen drama. The story follows teenage witches who are “bound by destiny to guard their city against dangerous, ancient forces.” The logline adds, “Between unraveling dark secrets, mastering volatile magic, and facing off against distractingly cute rivals, they must also navigate the heartbreaks and deep bonds that come with growing up.”
The series features Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar, Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves, Malachi Barton as Jake, Louis Thresher as Ollie, Jordan Leftwich as Sasha, and Ora Duplass as Tegan. Recurring guest stars include Brendon Tremblay as Alexander, Swayam Bhatia as McKenna, and Keegan Connor Tracy as Tamora.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, described the series saying, “’Coven Academy’ is an innovative format that blends supernatural intrigue with the friendships, challenges and self-discovery of the teenage experience. Under Tim Federle’s creative leadership, this magical high school comes alive with a breakout cast, continuing our tradition of creating stories and stars that connect deeply with today’s generation.”
Federle wrote and directed the pilot episode and is also an executive producer along with Kimberly McCullough and Bronwyn North-Reist, the head of creative at Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions. Federle is currently executive producing another Disney project, the live-action comedy “Vampirina: Teenage Vampire,” which is set to arrive on Disney Channel on September 12.
Fans can expect a fun mix of teenage drama and magical action, as the witches face both everyday challenges and supernatural threats in a vibrant New Orleans setting. Disney’s announcement makes it clear that “Coven Academy” aims to appeal to viewers who enjoy a mix of adventure, humor, and coming-of-age stories wrapped in a magical world.
According to Disney’s press release, the series promises to be “a thrilling, witty blend of magic, mystery and teen drama” that will showcase the struggles and bonds of its young characters as they grow into their powers and responsibilities.
“Coven Academy” is officially part of Disney’s 2026 lineup, and it will be available on both Disney+ and Disney Channel, giving fans multiple ways to dive into the magical world of teenage witches.
