Zack Snyder is finally bringing one of his oldest ideas to the screen. The filmmaker will begin shooting The Last Photograph later this month, a project he has been trying to make since the mid-2000s.

Unlike Snyder’s recent big-budget films filled with superheroes or outer space battles, this movie is a smaller drama. It will star Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, both of whom worked with Snyder on Rebel Moon.

The film is described as a war-driven story about an ex-DEA agent who travels through South America to rescue his niece and nephew after their parents are killed. He joins forces with a troubled photographer who may be the only person able to lead him to the truth.

Filming will take place in Colombia, Iceland, and Los Angeles. Production will involve several international companies, including Telecinco Cinema from Spain and Jaguar Bite from Colombia. The movie also qualifies for Colombia’s tax incentive program for film productions.

Snyder is producing with his longtime partner Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller through their company Stone Quarry. Other producers include Gianni Nunnari and Hollywood Gang Productions.

The music team includes Hans Zimmer, Steven Doar, and Omer Benyamin. The screenplay was written by Kurt Johnstad, who has worked with Snyder before on 300 and Rebel Moon, based on a story by Snyder himself.

Speaking about the project, Snyder said, “The idea of taking camera in hand and simply making a movie in an intimate way is very appealing to me. The Last Photograph is a meditation of life and death, embodying some of the trials that I have experienced in my own life and the exploration of those ideas through image making.”

This film has had a long road to production. At one point, it was set in Afghanistan, with actors like Christian Bale and Sean Penn attached. But after years of delays and Snyder’s focus on his DC films, it’s only now moving forward.

The director also has other projects in the works, including Brawler, an MMA drama, and an LAPD action thriller.

t’s exciting to see Snyder stepping away from giant franchises and going back to something more personal. A smaller, character-driven film could show a different side of him as a filmmaker. What do you think about Snyder tackling a war drama like this? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
