According to sources, Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald, the names behind Cobra Kai are in early discussions to write the Knight Rider movie, while Hurwitz and Schlossberg may also direct.

The trio will produce through their Counterbalance Entertainment company, joining Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87North, who are producing via their first-look deal with Universal. Gary Barber and Chris Stone will also produce through Spyglass.

Knight Rider originally aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986 and was created by TV producer Glen A. Larson. The show followed Michael Knight, played by David Hasselhoff, a detective working for FLAG, the Foundation for Law and Government.

His partner was KITT, a high-tech, indestructible, artificially intelligent Trans Am. Together, they fought criminals who operated above the law. The series was famous for its over-the-top concept, a charismatic lead, and unforgettable synth theme music.

A feature film has been in the works for a while, with a previous script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. “Expect the unexpected when it comes to the Cobra Kai creators,” sources say about the new take.

Hurwitz and Schlossberg first made their mark with the Harold & Kumar movies and later directed American Reunion for Universal. They teamed up with Heald to create, showrun, and executive produce Cobra Kai, which continues the Karate Kid story.

By blending old characters with new talent and mixing comedy with drama and action, the trio found a way to appeal to multiple generations. The show became one of Netflix’s biggest hits, with its third season earning an Emmy nomination for outstanding comedy series.

After finishing Cobra Kai’s sixth and final season earlier this year, Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald began exploring new projects. One of them is a new Harold & Kumar installment for Lionsgate/Mandate Pictures.

With the Cobra Kai team at the helm, fans can expect a bold, fresh take on Knight Rider that honors the original while bringing it to a modern audience.
