Prime Video Just Cancelled Yet Another Show With 95% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes
Prime Video has decided not to continue the YA drama Motorheads for a second season, according to Deadline.
The news comes just over three months after the series premiered its 10-episode first season on May 20.
Created by John A. Norris, who also served as showrunner, Motorheads starred Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, Uriah Shelton, and Nicolas Cantu.
The show followed a group of outsiders in a once-thriving rustbelt town, bonding over street racing while navigating high school and experiencing first heartbreaks. It has been described as “a story of a group of outsiders who form an unlikely friendship over a mutual love of street racing, while navigating the hierarchy and rules of high school.”
Despite the cancellation, there may be hope for fans. Sources told Deadline that the producers have already started shopping the series to other networks and streaming platforms, with Amazon’s approval.
Executive producer Jason Seagraves told Deadline, “We set out to make a show with no agenda and a lot of heart, to give families something they can watch together. While Johnny and I are disappointed Motorheads won’t be continuing at Prime Video, we couldn’t be more proud of what the team created.”
“Despite going into release with impossibly low audience awareness, our passionate and vocal fan base led the charge and made the series impossible to ignore. Their enthusiasm has energized us, and we’re optimistic we’ll find a home that believes in and supports the show.”
Motorheads had strong audience engagement since its premiere. It frequently appeared in Prime Video’s daily Top 10 shows in the U.S., even re-entering the rankings several times. The series also holds a 78% critic approval rating and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, the overall viewership may not have met Prime Video’s expectations, as the show never reached Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming rankings. Vernon Sanders, head of TV for Amazon MGM Studios, had previously mentioned to Deadline that a second season was being considered based on the show’s performance.
Fans quickly expressed their disappointment on social media. Many reacted angrily to the news, posting messages like: “they cancelled motorheads on prime and now my life has lost meaning oh harris bowers you could’ve been alive….. F*** YOU PRIME I’M DONE WITH YOU” and “motorheads is cancelled and again another show that had so much potential is gone at this point what IS the point.”
Others referenced previous cancellations, adding, “they cancelled the society which BROKE MY HEART and then cruel intentions and now motorheads. IM NEVER WATCHING ANYTHING AGAIN.”
Many shared their emotional struggles after the finale, with one fan writing, “I spent weeks with an emotional void after motorheads’ finale, that car crash, Caitlyn’s call… and then they cancel it? How do you move on from a show that never let you heal?”
It’s clear that Motorheads built a devoted fanbase that is frustrated by Prime Video’s decision. The producers hope to continue the series elsewhere, giving fans a chance to see the story continue.
I think the cancellation is disappointing because Motorheads offered something fresh in the YA drama space. With such strong fan support and critical acclaim, it deserves another chance. What do you think about Prime Video cancelling Motorheads? Share your thoughts in the comments.
