Sydney Sweeney Sets the Record Straight on ‘Euphoria’ Cast Feud Rumors and What Really Delayed Season 3
Few shows in recent memory have generated as much off-screen drama as ‘Euphoria,’ and much of that noise has had nothing to do with its storylines. For years, the internet has been consumed by theories about tension between its breakout stars, with whispers growing louder every time a cast member skipped a photoshoot or kept their distance at a press event. Now, with the final season wrapped and aired, one of the show’s central figures is finally addressing it all head-on.
Sydney Sweeney, who played Cassie Howard throughout the series, has been at the center of an alleged rivalry with co-star Zendaya, with the two not appearing together in a public photo since 2022. The speculation reached a fever pitch when HBO Max dropped a behind-the-scenes teaser for season three that featured Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, and Maude Apatow, while Sweeney was noticeably absent, prompting fans to declare that Zendaya had effectively exiled her from the group. A production source later told TMZ that Sweeney had simply been filming a scene elsewhere on set, but the rumor machine had already kicked into high gear.
In a candid interview with Vanity Fair’s Little Gold Men podcast, Sweeney pushed back on the years of narrative-spinning with characteristic directness. “Well, I mean, we all grew up together on this show, so it’s honestly crazy to watch how much social media and the press spin things,” she said. The comments arrive after Entertainment Tonight shared a clip of the actress opening up about the feud rumors, tying them specifically to the scheduling conflicts that were widely blamed for holding up production on the show’s third and final chapter.
On the scheduling front, Sweeney was equally firm. “I was in first position to HBO. So the moment they say, ‘Hey, this is the first day of filming,’ I’m legally not allowed to do anything else. So my schedule doesn’t affect the show. And so that was funny to watch everybody spin narratives on it,” she told the outlet. She also confirmed the arrangement applied to the entire cast, saying they were all locked in contractually and ready to go the moment HBO gave the green light.
Sweeney is not the only voice to have shut down the drama. Jessica Blair Herman, who plays Cassie’s neighbor on the show, told Good Day NY that the main actors got along on set and that “really, they’ve created this beautiful working relationship and everyone wants to do the work, to come in and do the job.” The real reasons behind the lengthy hiatus between seasons two and three, it turns out, were far less salacious. Creator Sam Levinson previously acknowledged that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, scheduling logistics, and the death of star Angus Cloud all contributed to the delays.
Cloud died at age 25 in July 2023 following an accidental overdose, and his loss deeply affected the entire production. Beyond the grief, reports also revealed that production had been delayed indefinitely due to Levinson’s scripts not being ready, compounding an already complicated situation. Despite it all, the show eventually made it back to screens, and the finale weekend drew 8.7 million cross-platform viewers in the United States, with episodes averaging 25 million viewers worldwide.
The feud narrative always said more about the internet’s appetite for celebrity conflict than it did about what was actually happening on set. Sweeney and her castmates built a career-defining show together, and the record now appears firmly corrected. Whether fans are satisfied with her explanation or still convinced there’s something bubbling beneath the surface is another matter entirely, so share your thoughts below on whether you believe the ‘Euphoria’ cast drama was ever real or always just a story the internet told itself.
