Netflix Secures Writer for Live-Action Adaptation of a Top Anime Hit

Netflix and Legendary are moving forward with their live-action version of My Hero Academia. The Hollywood Reporter shared that Jason Fuchs, best known for writing Wonder Woman and Argylle, has signed on to write the script.

Fuchs is no stranger to big stories about heroes, and his next job is taking on one of the most popular anime and manga series in the world.

The story of My Hero Academia began in 2014 in Shonen Jump magazine and has since become a global hit, spawning anime seasons, movies, toys, and more. Over 100 million copies of the manga are now in circulation.

The movie is being directed by Shinsuke Sato, who is known for adapting manga like Bleach and Kingdom. He has been attached to the project for some time, and with Fuchs now on board, the adaptation seems ready to take its next steps.

For those new to the series, My Hero Academia takes place in a world where most people are born with superpowers, called quirks. The main character is a boy who doesn’t have powers at first, but his dream is to be a hero.

His life changes when the world’s greatest hero gives him incredible abilities and sends him to a special school for superheroes. The school’s motto, plus ultra, means “push beyond.”

Anime has become a major part of Netflix’s global strategy THR reports. The platform has invested in several anime series and live-action adaptations, and My Hero Academia is one of the biggest names to get the treatment.

Outside of this project, Jason Fuchs has plenty on his plate. He co-created and serves as showrunner on It: Welcome to Derry, a prequel series to Stephen King’s It that is coming to HBO and Max in October.

He also works as an actor, appearing in films like It: Chapter Two and La La Land. Fuchs will also have a role in Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th prequel series from A24 and Peacock.
