In addition to the new season, the franchise is celebrating its first season with a series of compilation movies in Japan. While these films do not include new stories for Frieren, their release highlights the anime’s growing popularity.

On the manga side, a new anthology series titled Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End -Prelude- is set to launch. While it hasn’t yet been confirmed for an anime adaptation, it’s possible these side stories could make it to the screen in the future.

The main cast and staff from the first season are returning for season two, with Tomoya Kitagawa taking over as director, assisted by Daiki Harashina. The character design team also sees some changes, with Takasemaru, Keisuke Kojima, and Yuri Fujinaka joining the project.

The anime’s first season received widespread acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a perfect 100% approval rating based on five reviews, with an average score of 8.8 out of 10. Fans and critics alike praised the show for its calm, cozy atmosphere, engaging character dynamics, and strong storytelling.

Ali Griffiths of Digital Spy called it “one of the best fantasy anime from 2023,” noting the way the series handles the passage of time. Richard Eisenbeis of Anime News Network highlighted the development of Frieren’s character and relationships, while Jenni Lada from Siliconera praised the anime for blending drama and slice-of-life elements effectively.

The anime has also earned numerous awards and nominations. It won the New Face Award at the Japan Character Awards and received recognition for its animation, music, and character design at several events, including the Tokyo Anime Award Festival and AnimaniA Awards.

Voice actress Atsumi Tanezaki, who plays Frieren, has been nominated and awarded for her performance. The soundtrack, featuring songs like “Yūsha” by Yoasobi and “Sunny” by Yorushika, has also been highly praised.

Season two promises to be one of the most significant anime releases of 2026, with fans eagerly awaiting new adventures and deeper dives into Frieren’s world.
