Apple TV+ has confirmed that its hit sci-fi series Foundation will return for a fourth season. The renewal was announced just ahead of the third season finale, which is set to stream this Friday. The series is based on Isaac Asimov’s classic stories.

Co-showrunners and executive producers Ian Goldberg and David Kob shared their excitement in a statement.

“There is no series quite like Foundation, and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four. We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to be working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business,” they said.

Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, praised the show’s global popularity. “It’s been fantastic to watch Foundation become such a global phenomenon, with fans tuning in from every corner of the world. With each new season, the excitement around this trailblazing sci-fi epic just keeps building due to the bold storytelling and collective artistry of this extraordinarily talented cast and creative team. We’re excited to keep exploring this universe together in season four,” Cherniss added.

The series stars Jared Harris, Lee Pace, and Lou Llobell, alongside Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, Terrence Mann, and Rowena Kingwith. Season three introduced new cast members, including Cherry Jones, Brandon P. Bell, Synnøve Karlsen, Cody Fern, Tómas Lemarquis, Alexander Siddig, Troy Kotsur, and Pilou Asbæk.

Foundation is produced by Paramount Television Studios. Goldberg and Kob will executive produce season four along with Bill Bost, Lee Pace, Michael Satrazemis, Robyn Asimov, and David S. Goyer.

The show has received strong reviews from critics. Season three holds a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 20 reviews, with the site noting, “Foundation’s narratively knotty third season doesn’t quite measure up to its superb predecessor, but this sci-fi epic endures as a faithful and well-acted adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s masterpiece.”

On Metacritic, it has a weighted score of 83 out of 100, indicating “universal acclaim.”

The series has also earned multiple award nominations and wins, including a Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode. Other nominations have come from the American Society of Cinematographers, the Art Directors Guild, the Critics’ Choice Super Awards, and the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Foundation continues to set a high bar for sci-fi television with its ambitious storytelling and strong production values. Season four promises to expand the universe even further. Fans of the series have plenty to look forward to. Are you excited for the next season? Share your thoughts in the comments.
