Fans of Prime Video’s hit series Mr. & Mrs. Smith will have to wait longer to find out who survived the dramatic Season 1 finale.

Sources tell Deadline that production on the show’s second season has been delayed indefinitely due to cast-related issues, putting the series’ future on hold.

Originally, Mark Eydelshteyn, known for Anora, and Sophie Thatcher from Yellowjackets, were cast as the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith in December 2024 and February 2025, respectively.

The show had planned to relocate production to Los Angeles from New York, where the first season was filmed, and it even received a $22.4 million tax credit from the California Film Commission on March 31, 2025.

Over the summer, rumors swirled about potential guest stars, including Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura, and Gael Garcia Bernal.

However, none of these deals were officially confirmed, and with pre-production on hold, the series will not begin filming as initially planned in the fall. Sources say New Regency, which co-produces the show with Amazon MGM Studios, hopes to start pre-production by the end of the year for a 2026 shoot.

Adding to the uncertainty, showrunner Francesca Sloane, who created the series with Donald Glover, recently moved to HBO with an overall deal and is set to write the opening episode of Big Little Lies Season 3. It is still unclear if Glover and co-star Maya Erskine will return for Season 2.

The postponement could affect the California tax incentive, which requires projects to film within 18 months of receiving the credit. Industry insiders note that there is still time, and relocating series often receive new credits if they miss their original window of eligibility.

Amazon renewed Mr. & Mrs. Smith for a second season on May 14, 2024, with Sloane set to return as showrunner. Eydelshteyn’s casting was announced in December 2024, and in July 2025, it was reported that production would move to Los Angeles. By September 2025, sources confirmed the delay due to ongoing casting issues.
